Brahman Reduces Heat Stress in Beef Herds

HE HOT SUN OF SUMMER SENDS most breeds of cattle to the shade during the af-
ternoons. We asked purebred and commercial Brahman producers if they noticed signs of heat stress in their cattle, and if so, what are the signs? The answers are encouraging.

Brahman cattle I can truly say that I have never seen purebred Brahman cattle exhibit any sign of heat stress, even when working or moving them on 100-plus-degree days. The only exception I have ever seen is very
young Brahman calves, younger than 30 days of age. Brahman cattle have the ability
to sweat and do not need to give off heat through their lungs. Brah- man cross-bred cattle likewise ex- hibit heat tolerance depending on the amount of Brahman breeding they carry. Half Brahman cattle are
