From the Chairman
A Year to Remember Hot out of the gate, Paint racing seems to be on the track for success in 2013.
P
aint racing in 2013 is off to another fast start. Opening night at Remington Park has traditionally been one of the best nights for Paint racing, and this year was no exception. On March 8, APHA hosted the 2012 Parade of Champions at Remington Park, where we honored last year’s Champions and presented their well-earned awards. This annual event continues to grow in attendance and is a great way to kick off each new year of Paint racing. It is always great to be able to see and visit with old friends and meet new folks in our industry. I would like to thank and recognize the APHA Director of Racing Karen Utecht for all of her hard work in making this night truly special for every- one in attendance. Jim and Shirley Wheeler

started 2013 right where they left off in 2012. Their Champion-producing mare Game Chicken is the dam of the 2-year-old Imflashin- thechicks, who won the first futurity of the year by domi- nating the field in the Okla- homa Paint Futurity. Not to be outdone, the Wheelers’ 3-year-old Imachickenkicker
edged out her older half-brother Flashthechicks to win this year’s Paul Harber Memorial Handicap. Imflashinthechicks, Coal County Line, Situation
and Flashem Annie are already making a name for themselves this year as the leading 2-year-olds. They not only finished in that order in the Oklahoma Paint Futurity, but also all qualified for the finals of the 2013 PSBA American Paint Classic Futurity. This looks to be another competitive year for Paint racing.
APHA Masterpiece Challenge I would like to thank everyone that made the first
year of the Masterpiece Challenge a success. With the addition of $10,000-added money by Paint Horse Rac- ing for the 2013 Masterpiece Challenge, this program is off to a great start. Thanks to everyone on the Racing Committee who helped establish this program and to

those that are now taking advantage of it. The Racing Committee and APHA will continue to do everything possible to make this the centerpiece for our 3-year- old racehorses. Participation continues to grow and enrolled horses
are increasing—make sure your horses are enrolled, too. Complete details of how to take advantage of this great program are available on the APHA racing web- site. The $300 yearling enrollment deadline and the $100 weanling enrollment deadline is December 31. Please support this program by entering your horses.
Paint Barrel Racing Incentive Program PBRIP is now an official APHA barrel racing
program designed to support our Paint barrel racing industry, and we’ve completed our first online stallion service auction. Thank you to all of the stallion own- ers for their donations and the breeders for bidding on them. Stallion breedings are still available for $275 on a first-come, first-serve basis—visit the APHA rac- ing website for more details. Barrel-race promoters can now apply to have their
barrel races approved by APHA and PBRIP, so Paint Horses can earn APHA points as well as special side jackpots. Money raised by PBRIP will be added to barrel races to create more financial incentives for Paint barrel horses. Watch for PBRIP added-money races, which will be identified soon. We would like to thank the entire APHA staff who continue to make the Paint Horse Racing magazine a great publication for our industry. As members, we need to continue to support the publication by advertising and making sure we do everything to help increase subscriptions by encouraging anyone related directly or indirectly to Paint racing to subscribe. If anyone has any questions or comments, please con- tact Editor Jessica Hein at (817) 222-6405. We wish everyone the best of luck for 2013. With
your support and involvement, 2013 will definitely be a year to remember and the beginning to a very bright future for Paint racing.
