Left: Any barrel race can apply for PBRIP-sanc- tioning. Benefits include the potential to attract more contestants thanks to the opportunity to win Paint-specific jackpot money.

Right: As more bar- rel racers enroll in the PBRIP program and more events are sanc- tioned, Paints will be eligible to compete for more money than most other horses.

APHA has removed barriers that

previously limited barrel race produc- ers who wanted to host dual-approved events. Under the new guidelines, APHA judges are not required—results will be based on time only—and there is greater flexibility in pattern size. Dual-approved barrel races will also provide a more exhibitor-friendly path to APHA World Show qualification. “We know there’s a number of out- standing Paint barrel horses competing at local barrel races outside of APHA- approved shows,” Billy said. “Through PBRIP, we hope to reinvigorate these exhibitors’ commitment to APHA and provide valuable incentives for

exhibitors excelling aboard American Paint Horses.”

PBRIP will add incentive money to

certain events in the future, as well. Check out the sidebar on the facing page to learn more about getting a barrel race PBRIP-sanctioned through APHA. In order to be eligible for PBRIP side pots, exhibitors must be enrolled in the program and meet a few requirements. Simply fill out the PBRIP Exhibitor Enrollment applica- tion and submit it to APHA with the $35 annual enrollment fee. Exhibitors must be current APHA members in good standing, and they must ride

a registered Paint Horse that meets APHA’s stake race eligibility rule—see the sidebar on this page. Of particular interest to barrel racers is the ability for Regular Registry and Solid Paint-Bred horses to compete equally for PBRIP money and points. “That in itself is a huge step for bar-

rel racers,” Melanie said. “This allows all of those solid horses to participate and run for the same money the col- ored horses are running for, so long as they were bred keeping color in mind.” The final component of PBRIP is an annual stallion service auction—this year, more than 30 Paint and Quarter Horse stallions participated.
