from the auction will be used to fund incentives and PBRIP side pots. In the future, PBRIP organizers also hope to create stallion subscription and prog- eny enrollment components. For the latest news and information about PBRIP, visit the Paint racing website.
Good for the Industry With PBRIP officially up and run- ning, Melanie and other supporters have been trying to spread the word about this new program via emails, social media and word of mouth. Melanie says support seems strong for PBRIP. “Every time I mention it, the barrel racers are behind it,” she said. And they have good reason to stand behind PBRIP. Aside from taking APHA to the people, so to speak, the incentive program will help strengthen the Paint racing and speed-event mar- kets while also increasing the value and marketability of these horses. “I’m hoping it will help stimulate
the APHA running-bred market as a whole,” Melanie said. “The Paint bar- rel horses and the horses that run on the track are being bred hand in hand.
A lot of them come off the track and go right in to barrel training. “I’d really like to see people who
own these Paint barrel horses looking for PBRIP-sanctioned shows. In the next few years, I think we’re going to see that once people realize there is all of that added money out there. As people go out looking for PBRIP shows, they’re also going to think about it when they buy their next bar- rel horse—they’re going to buy a Paint that is eligible to run in these added side pots.” Melanie implores Paint breeders,
owners and exhibitors to support PBRIP. “If they own Paint stallions and
Paint mares and are going to be producing Paints, it’s going to make their horses more valuable in the long run, plain and simple,” she said. “The more involvement we get, the more money is going to be out there. Their horses are going to be eligible for more money than most of the other horses out there.”

PBRIP Benefits Producers, Too
Making a barrel race PBRIP-sanctioned, in addition to being APHA dual-approved, will likely help producers attract more exhibi- tors and entries to their events. Because exhibitors benefit from attending PBRIP-sanctioned events—they can earn PBRIP side pot paybacks, establish APHA records on their horses, and qualify for the World Championship Show and other APHA awards— these contestants will be looking for PBRIP events, giving these sanctioned barrel races an edge in the marketplace. Following is a guide of what producers need to provide for PBRIP sanctioning: 1. Get PBRIP-sanctioned.
Complete the PBRIP Special Event Approval Application and submit it to APHA at least 30 days before the show, along with the application fee. Application fees are $25 per set of points awarded to APHA horses—producers can choose to offer one or two sets of APHA points at their barrel races. 2. Agree to offer a PBRIP side pot.
This is conditional to PBRIP event approval. PBRIP may provide a start-up fund to be used for a PBRIP side pot, and a portion of exhibitors’ PBRIP entry fees collected at the event will also supplement the jackpot. 3. Verify exhibitors’ PBRIP enrollment and collect PBRIP fees.
Show management is responsible for checking the following, provided by PBRIP contestants: APHA horse registration papers, exhibitors’ APHA membership cards and proof of PBRIP enrollment. In order to be eligible for PBRIP side pots, exhibitors must also pay the PBRIP side pot entry fee as set forth by the event producers.
4. Submit PBRIP show results and fees. Within 15 days of the show’s conclusion, management must submit the PBRIP show result form to APHA so points can be awarded to contestants. A $10 fee for each PBRIP entry must also be forwarded to APHA—these fees help cover PBRIP advertising and administration so more folks know about your events, and a portion is also reserved for PBRIP side pots at the APHA World Shows.
