To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Vooruit staged Poster Sessions, giving young musicians the chance to recreate sets by some of the famous artists to have graced the stage. Marc Maeswent along

THE VOORUIT building began life 100 years ago and for the past 30 years, the Kunstencentrum Vooruit (Vooruit Centre of Arts) has provided the venue’s cultural content with concerts, expositions, dance, literature and events. In addition to the main concert hall, dance hall and two theatre halls, the Vooruit also features meeting rooms and rehearsal studios like the Emielstudio. The Emielstudio now features an exposition area for a vintage poster collection of artists that have played the Vooruit. “The idea was that the billboards would inspire musicians and bands – after a week of rehearsals, the bands then reinterprete songs from artists displayed on the posters, live on stage, every Friday, during the so-called Poster

Sessions,” explains Peter Misschaert, head of the Vooruit’s stage production. On the technical side, Misschaert opted for simple, yet powerful and high-quality kit.

“Some of the songs are subtle, but there’s some rock too,” he says. At the start of each week, bands or musicians are coached to work with the audio system – they get a basic set up

knowledge and continue to work without a system tech in the room. “That’s why we chose a Behringer X32 console: a fine combination of user-friendliness and good sound. We’ve also provided a number of preset configurations in that console – and this modus operandi is appreciated by the musicians, ” says Misschaert.

“The FOH system consists of The Behringer X32 was chosen for its “user-friendliness and good sound”

a [Renkus-Heinz] IC Live system: an innovative, relatively small but high loudspeaker, modestly placed alongside the stage. Modest looks but perfectly digitally steerable,” explains Steven Kemland of distributor Face. “The Vooruit demanded a wide-angle system and the self-powered IC Live array offers an ideal 150° dispersion. The two IC Live array components are combined with two IC 212 powered double 12” sub speakers.”

The monitor system consists

of six Martin Audio DD6 speakers, powered by a Powersoft M50Q amplifier with built-in DSP, providing the correct setting for the monitors. “The IC Live’s output can be beamed from close to the stage to the rear wall of the venue, delivering the same volume and sound colour all the way,” adds Misschaert. A mix of Shure, EV, AKG and Sennheiser microphones with Radial DI’s completes the set. During the Poster Sessions, bands and individual musicians performed songs by Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Lenny Kravitz, Lloyd Cole, Daft Punk and the Cure – legendary bands that played the famous venue in the past. The Poster Sessions started in May this year and run until the last weekend of October. n www.behringer.com www.renkus-heinz.com
