broadcastnews GERMANY/SWITZERLAND Riedel routing for Studer By Erica Basnicki
RIEDEL COMMUNICATIONS and Harman’s Studer have announced a joint development that will provide Studer consoles woth direct integration with MediorNet systems over Studer’s new proprietary A-Link digital interface. The scalable audio routing system is capable of offering I/O capacities in excess of 10,000 x 10,000 inputs and outputs. Studer is the first company to enter into a distribution agreement with Riedel, whereby Studer will be able to supply complete systems including consoles and routers. A-Link, developed by Studer, is a point- to-point topology similar to MADI, but is much faster and with a potential capacity of 1,500 channels per connection.
GERMANY Delec introduces compact comms By Erica Basnicki
DELEC, THE intercom and commentary systems specialists within the Salzbrenner Stagetec Mediagroup, introduced the Oratis compact intercom system at IBC2013. At a press conference, Delec sales engineer Jürgen Malleck emphasised the key offering from the compact was “double the matrix size in a 1U 19-inch rack for the same cost as the nearest rival”. The new unit acts as a fully summing audio matrix to which the various Oratis series subscriber units can be connected. Two different frame sizes are available, equipped with 12 (MF1212) or 16 (MF1624) AES/EBU ports which are connected via RJ-45 connectors and Cat5 cabling to the subscriber units, or they can be used as digital four-wire connections. Twelve or 24 additional
analogue ports are used to set up analogue four-wire links. When connected in this way, the Oratis compact is a fully-fledged
The two companies have
worked closely to develop A- Link interface cards for Riedel’s MediorNet and Studer Vista and OnAir DSP engines. A single MediorNet 2U box fitted with six A-link cards can deliver a matrix of 4,608 x 4,608 inputs and outputs, connected to A-Link cards in Studer’s SCore Live DSP systems using optical cables. This configuration provides a
cost-effective and powerful routing system in just 2U, at a lower cost than many lower- capacity systems.
The MediorNet system also
allows for further expansion and integration possibilities, since the system may be configured to provide a video and audio routing solution, with de- embedded audio from the SDI streams being sent to the Studer
consoles, and the return signals embedded back onto the video. For larger-scale applications, the MediorNet system may be configured with several networked frames in a distributed routing network, complete with redundant-ring topology. Andy Trott, Studer’s VP and

stand-alone system. Using a Delec connection to Gigabit Ethernet, they can also be networked with other Delec components, enables the creaion of a large Oratis installation. “The units are suitable not
only for compact TV-production installations but theatre staff will surely welcome this user-
friendly and well-priced solution,” said Malleck. The Oratis compact can also be equipped with an optional Audinate Brooklyn module, which provides additional connectivity options using Dante. n

SELF-STYLED ‘EQUIPMENT banker’ AED Group has acquired the huge Alfacam Eurocam Mediacenter. A media facility company specialising in TV production and large-scale event recording for music and sport (up to and including the London Olympics and the FIFA World Cup), Alfacam was declared bankrupt in April of this year when it failed to secure financial backing. Whereas Alfacam’s activities will be taken over by a group of investors in the Euro Media Group, the company’s vast headquarters in Lint, south of the Belgian capital Antwerp, have been acquired by Willebroek-based AED. The facility has been renamed AED Studios and began operation on 1 October. When it shut down, Alfacam comprised 16 studios, 12
production rooms, 41 artist suites, 17 apartments, 3,000sqm of office space and four artist backstage areas, surrounded by some 14,000sqm of parking. AED Group – which runs several business strands inlcuding distritbution, rental, leassing and sales, and has satellite offices in the Netherlands, France, Germany and the UK – aims to invest €5 million in upgrading Alfacam’s technical facilities. Glenn Roggeman, CEO
of AED Group, says he’s happy to continue the media activities at the Lint site. “This acquisition also aims at safeguarding 60% of the employment – in the next phase, we want to start negotiations to use the adjacent 18,000sqm former industrial site for either expansion or housing purposes,” explains Roggeman. n

general manager, commented: “We’ve been working with Riedel for two years on this, and this solution is simply amazing! The power of the combined systems is unrivalled in the audio market and we see great opportunities for our customers from these developments. To have such a massive I/O capacity in such a small amount of hardware would have been unimaginable only five years ago,” he said. n
