welcome EDITOR’S COMMENT
I DO LIKE September, because that means the iTunes Festival at the Roundhouse. Whatever the gig, it always reveals something new to me. Last year, for instance, I discovered that Labrinth (who I never rated) is quite brilliant as a performer and musician as well as a canny producer; and that Deadmau5 (who I do rate) is a bit of a tool.
I went twice in 2013, and, once again, iTunes opened my eyes. At Sigur Rós, early in the month, I noticed a flown PA design I couldn’t recognise. Headscratching was soon averted when I spotted flightcases at the FOH position clearly marked AudioRent Clair. And then Concert Sound Clair’s Tim Boyle at the bar. Something of a give-away, that.
“Hey, you idiots, there’s a pianist on stage trying to perform a solo, had you not noticed?”
Unfortunately, Live Nation and Concert Sound won’t talk about it until the Festival is over. So I’m getting my mention in now. Just, well, because. We had all that ‘can’t say anything’ nonsense with the Olympics last year, thank you very much. The Ludovico Einaudi gig on the 17th supplied a bigger revelation, perhaps, than Martin Audio losing its usual month at the Roundhouse: one about the audience. iTunes is not the Barbican, I can tell you that. I had the luck of being up on the balcony, with other guest list types, VIPs and so on. What a bunch of disrespectful ignoramuses! People getting up halfway through a piece; knocking cups over; talking; looking at their phone; opening packets of crisps. Hey, you idiots, there’s a virtuoso pianist on stage, with the most deft and dynamic of touches, trying to perform a solo, had you not noticed? Still, iTunes balcony seats are free. That means the ticket has no value, and therefore the artist too: these liggers and chancers seemed to think so at any rate. Next time, just stay at home, OK? Tell you what was good though. Just turn the page.
