Erica Basnicki looks forward to the New York City show this month THE AUDIO
Engineering Society is celebrating its 65th year
of Conventions this year in New York with the first ever Systems Sound Symposium sessions, an expanded broadcast and streaming session and a presentation from the sound team of the Emmy Award-winning reality show Deadliest Catch, who capture audio from what is perhaps the most difficult environment this side of a war zone. The inaugural Systems Sound Symposium, sponsored by Systems Contractor News, will bring together leaders in the business of installed AV, with an
emphasis on how installed sound is expanding the professional audio industry. Four in-depth panel discussions will address the opportunities and issues affecting business growth and profitability in the near and long term. This year’s expanded
broadcast and streaming sessions – once again chaired by 27-year veteran David Bialik – will offer a look at the implications of how new technologies will affect broadcast and streaming audio, such as ‘Audio For 4K TV’ and ‘Broadcasting During Disasters’, a look at how Hurricane Sandy last year impacted news and other broadcast operations, as well as updated iterations
of longstanding issues facing the industry, such as loudness and maintenance. Meanwhile, Deadliest Catch
re-recording mixer/sound designer Bob Bronow and picture editor Josh Earl will showcase the tools and the techniques used to capture sound aboard the crab boats working around the Aleutian Islands in the Pacific Ocean. European manufacturers
exhibiting products at the Convention include SSL, which will introduce its live console to the North American market. Launched at Prolight + Sound in Frankfurt this year, the SSL Live console features
with a technical specification that, on paper, is superlative in terms of flexibility, power and signal fidelity. “It’s punching above its weight […] for a desk at this price-point,” head of marketing Dan Duffell told PSNEurope earlier this year. DPA will present its two
Podium microphones, based on the company’s d:dicate recording microphone range which will also be presented to the North American market for the first time. The d:dicate range includes DPA’s new modular MMC4018 supercardioid capsule, the counterpart to the MMC4018V capsule used in
the company’s
d:facto vocal microphone, and the MMC4007 high-SPL omnidirectional capsule, a modular version of the company’s 4007 microphone. Also, Clear-Com will be
exhibiting its enhanced Eclipse HX Digital Matrix System and HelixNet Partyline Intercom System. It is also highlighting its new RS-700 Series Analogue Partyline Beltpacks and ICON Connectivity Solutions (seen at IBC), as well as the most recent updates to its Tempest Wireless Intercom System. n
