Enensys — OneBeam: This allows one satellite delivery network to carry both DTT services to transmitters and DTH services to end users,” which can save considerably on

OneBeam to rule them all: Lhermitte promises large cost savings to combined DTT/DTH users

operational costs,” said Richard Lhermitte, VP sales and marketing. “It is ideal for anyone who already has a DTH service and may want an entry- level offering on DTT. Also, DTT operators who want to reach those users in hard to reach areas (the last 5% who otherwise can’t get

DDT), so can cover the entire country.” In one large European territory with less than 170 transmitters, it will return its investment in less than six months, but a country with 5000 transmitters would take much longer as OneBeam systems are needed at both head end and transmitters. www.enensys.com

Efficiency gains: The AVP 4000 can deliver anything from SD to UHD, using multiple codecs

Ericsson — AVP 4000 encoder: This is “the most powerful compression platform of its kind, it is also a truly multi-platform solution which does not compromise on picture quality or development flexibility,” claimed Dr Giles Wilson, head of TV compression. It “brings the highest performance we’ve ever had in MPEG-2 and MPEG-4, primarily due to new work with algorithms,” said Fabio Murra, head of portfolio marketing, compression. Compared to Ericsson’s previous generation, it can produce 10-20% better efficiency — with the right content. “Operators can not sit still waiting for HEVC, so they have to maximise the infrastructure they have in place today.” AVP users will also be able to upgrade to HEVC. www.ericsson.com

Turner with a Cobham Explorer 710 terminal, one of the first to

support BGAN HDR LGZ’s new USB Recorder

will allow USB sticks or drives to replace DVDs for distributing viewing copies

LGZ Broadcasting Technology — USB Recorder: This is the “answer to the ageing fleet of DVD Recorders that plague most OB trucks,” said CEO Joachim Koitsalu. “Many customers want immediate and distributable copies of the recorded events for all involved parties. DVDs have long fitted the bill, but these take up lots of space, offer low video quality and are quite expensive. We therefore have developed a unique solution (from what we know the only one worldwide) that records an audio video signal (HD-SDI) live on to eight USB sticks simultaneously.” After pressing Stop Record, it only takes 10 seconds until eight copies on USB sticks (or hard drives) can be distributed, with standard H.264 HD files. It costs €2100 including a Blackmagic Design DeckLink SDI interface. www.lgztech.com

Aylmer-Hall: NetCaster makes it easier to take in multiple live remote links from iPhone or iPad

LiveWire Digital — NetCaster: This allows contributions from many people to a live show from iPhones or iPads via satellite, cellular or WiFi services. “There is no physical limit, other than internet connectivity,” said Richard Aylmer-Hall, business development manager. The system will display one, two, four or six images at a time (there is a template engine that would allow users to set up, say, one large window and two small). The initial package, funded by the European Space Agency, will be available soon, but it will then add further features requested at IBC, such as remote control from the studio. It can also be used for satellite phone calls.

Nucomm/Dejero — Connect Live: This camera-mounted bonded cellular and microwave system for ENG use is claimed to be “the most versatile SD/HD live-news wireless camera system on the market.” It can deliver interviews with 1.5-second latency and is the result of joint development between Integrated Microwave Technologies and Dejero. Making the connection: The Connect Live camera-mounted hybrid transmitter

Inmarsat — BGAN High Data Rate (HDR):This newly- launched higher-speed satellite connection from a laptop-sized uplink “offers a level of video quality that gives the journalist in the field a lot more flexibility,” said Martin Turner, director, media enterprise industry. He believes it is a perfect back up to cellular bonding. “We are seeing these different technologies coming together.” Indeed, you can control the BGAN from LiveU, TVU, Streambox or other bonding systems. “We are working very closely with them to make the experience as seamless as possible.” Two BGAN HDR terminals can be bonded together to offer streaming rates of up to about 1.4Mbps. www.inmarsat.com

Going DEEP into the second

screen, using semantic

algorithms to automatically compile content for show-related magazines

include: audio talkback (IFB) support; adaptive bitrate MPEG-4 video encoding; bonded cellular with up to four internal cards (EVDO, 3G, 4G, LTE); WiFi; Ka-band satellite connection through Ethernet; COFDM covering the entire 2GHz and 5.8GHz frequencies; SDI, HDMI and composite (analogue) and mini-XLR stereo analogue audio inputs; and a 5-inch (800x480) LCD monitor/touchscreen interface. www.imt-broadcast.comwww.dejero.com

Viaccess-Orca — DEEP (Data Enrichment and Engagement Platform): If broadcasters want to enhance their offering on second-screen devices, such as the iPad, DEEP allows the automatic generation of digital magazines about their shows. “DEEP offers value to viewers during the entire content experience on the second screen, from the discovery process prior to watching TV content, through the interaction and engagement stage while viewing, and finally to the exploration phase once the programme is over,” said François Moreau de Saint Martin, CEO. “Not only does this provide users with a more engaging experience, but it also allows service providers to deliver targeted and contextual advertising content to viewers and increase their revenue streams.” www.viaccess-orca.com
