Antelope PICO is the smallest camera to join the high-speed merry-go-round

The Z1 for the 4K era: Sony’s new PXW-Z100

Sony — PXW-Z100: What the venerable Z1 did for HD, Sony hopes the Z100 will do for 4K, allowing users to begin shooting UHD even if they deliver HD, “and giving them the comfort of knowing they are investing in future-proof technology,” said Sony channel sales manager (Northern Europe), Dave Cheesman. It will cost about €6500 and record XAVC 4K 50p/60p, 4:2:2 10-bit at 500/600Mbps, HD at up to 223Mbps (I-frame initially, LongGoP next year) from its single 1/2.33-inch Exmor R sensor. “There’s always going to be an engineering compromise from packing more pixels into a smaller chip,” he admitted, but it should have similar low-light performance to the PMW-100. www.pro.sony.eu

Antelope — PICO:The high-speed minicam can do 340fps in full HD, and can be fully integrated into a live outside broadcast via three BNC cables to the CCU giving the OB truck total control of the camera and high-speed cache clips. “The camera has a constant live 50fps HD output, so it can be intercut,” said technical manager, Christian Schreiber. It can also have integrated de-flicker inside the CCU to eliminate pulsing light. The C-mount camera can be used with a tiny zoom lens, such as last year’s Best of IBC pick the Resolve Optics Z10, or Kowa’s even smaller new 10 megapixel prime lenses, which work in much lower light. www.antelope.tv

Multidyne — The BullDog: This compact field fibre transport system for sports or ENG can transmit any camera signal, including HD-SDI video, audio, intercom, control data, GPIOs, tally, and power, as well as eight HD-SDI signals in any direction using a single fibre cable. “It’s small, square, rugged and ugly, like its namesake,” said MultiDyne president Frank Jachetta. It can operate on a lightweight battery pack, local power, or with remote power over SMPTE hybrid fibre using MultiDyne’s Juice power supply. With Juice built in, The BullDog extends transmission distance, enabling simple plug-and-play operation and delivery of up to 100 watts of power to 300m without requiring local power or batteries. It can also power user accessories. www.multidyne.com

High speed,

higher resolution: The 1,000fps Phantom Flex4K

Tokina — Hydrophilic Coating Filter: So that you don’t have to wipe raindrops from your lens this filter prevents them even forming. It is made from hardened optical glass, coated with a photocatalyst layer (for UV protection), and topped with the hydrophilic layer, which is self-cleaning and claimed to be ‘extraordinarily durable.’ It was developed with NHK and avoids the need for vibrating or spinning filters or wipers. It will be available early 2014 as 77mm, 82mm, 86mm, 95mm, 105mm, 112mm, and 127mm round filters with an ultra-thin frame for use with wide-angle

lenses, as well as 4x4, 4x5.6 and 6.6x6.6 large-format versions. www.tokinalens.com

High speed, higher resolution: The 1000fps Phantom Flex4K

Vision Research — Phantom Flex4K:This can deliver 1000fps high-speed video at 4K resolution (4096x2160) and twice that in HD. It has a Super35mm sensor and all-new hot-swappable Phantom CineMag IV storage in sizes up to 2TB. Output is uncompressed Cine RAWformat for maximum quality, but Vision Research will introduce in-camera compression via a firmware update in early 2014. It also has 3G HD-SDI video outputs for use with external recorders. A new control interface allows all camera parameters to be set from a menu on the right side of the camera, eliminating the need for software connection on set, with shortcuts for popular functions and multiple user presets for quick setup. Controls for capture, playback, save and monitoring are on both sides of the camera. www.visionresearch.com

Thales Angénieux — Optimo 25-250 DP T3.5: The 10x lens is lighter, more affordable and attracted huge interest at IBC, with “very numerous orders”, according to Jean-Yves Le Poulain, Thales Angénieux product manager for cinema/TV lenses. The 25-250mm zoom is comparable to the 28-340mm and 24-290mm Optimo DPs in quality, but weighs 7kg instead of 11kg and is more compact. It has 32mm sensor coverage with “close to 6K” resolution, minimum focus of 1.2m, and good flare correction, so it can work without a shade. Filters, even gels, fit at the rear of the lens, at a point where dirt on the filter isn’t critical. It has a Cooke /i technology interface for metadata, and will cost €39,000 in February. www.angenieux.com
