The cloud, the increasing predominance of IT-based systems and 4K were the key trends at IBC this year. The show was packed with more than 1,400 exhibitors, most of whom had new products on display. For those who couldn’t make it to Amsterdam, or who just couldn’t get to every stand, the combined teams ofThe IBC Dailyand TVBEurope have picked out the most interesting innovations, particularly those that should make broadcasters lives easier, cheaper and more efficient. ARRI— UWZ 9.5-18 Ultra Wide Zoom: It is claimed to be “the first super wide-angle zoom lens for the professional cine market.” The T2.9 9.5-18mm zoom has an accommodating image circle of 33.7mm, to cover existing and future large-sensor digital cameras. It uses patented technologies to overcome problems with previous wide-angle
zooms and is claimed to have optical performance comparable to, or better than, some high-end wide-angle prime lenses. It is optimised for VFX applications. Distortion is less than 1% at 9.5mm and less than 0.1% at 18mm, so that straight lines stay straight. A new multilayer, anti-reflective coating minimises flare and veiling glare.

Abakus — 35mm Stadium Lens: The 9mm T2.8 PL-mount lens is very compact, has a super wide 202˚view, weighs just 1.6kg and will cost £11,500. Although called a stadium lens, it is also useful in confined spaces, such as on a car dashboard, where it can show the view from both side windows. It has an internal filter holder, “because you can’t put one on the curved lens at the front, however, there is a front protector you can fit, for use on helicopters or exposed locations, that uses a plastic that is really good optically and doesn’t attract dust,” said Abakus founder, Dr Ken Pollitt.

ARRI — Amira:ARRI’s first documentary-style shoulder-mount digital camera takes the sensor and many features of its Alexa, and adds in-camera colour grading and 200fps shooting. “Everyone wants the Alexa image quality, but said ‘make the camera smaller, lighter and more affordable’,” said Stephan Shenk, ARRI’s general manager, camera division. “But not too small or too light, as documentary shooting often involves large lenses that need to be balanced.” Its live colour management, with 3D LUTs, means that those without time or budget to do elaborate colour grading can get the look they want and go straight to air. It is designed to be flexible and easy to use, with a new cooling system using a thermal pipe (the same principle as the new Mac Pro), and will start shipping in early 2014.

Canon — EOS-1D C: This 4K (4096x2160) camera has become the first DSLR to meet EBU Tech 3335 requirements that show it delivers an image of high enough quality for HD Tier 1 broadcast production (1080 50/60p). In independent tests, it was shown to provide ‘exceptional’ HD resolution from a 4K source with ‘very low’ aliasing, and ‘good’ colour performance and motion portrayal. It has in-camera 4K recording with 4:2:2 colour sampling (using the new SanDisk Extreme Pro CF cards, which guarantee at least 520Mbps recording — the EOS 1-D C requires 500Mbps at 4K).

Blackmagic Design — Blackmagic Production Camera 4K: There are already thousands of orders for this $3995 4K camera, which supports Ultra HD and 1080HD resolution capture in 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97 and 30fps, and should start shipping this month. It has a Super35mm sensor, takes Canon EF-mount lenses, records CinemaDNG Raw and Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) to its built-in SSD recorder, and has a 6G-SDI output for live production. When you consider that it includes both the UltraScope software for live scopes (via the built-in Thunderbolt connection) and the DaVinci Resolve colour grading software, it represents tremendous value for a 4K camera.
