2013 sees our biggest ever ‘Best of IBC’ list; a total of 81 new products launched

Product leaders By Fergal Ringrose

THIS ISSUE we’re delighted to bring you TVBEurope’s Best of IBC 2013 awards, starting page 20. Of course there are other awards handed out around IBC-time, but we’re confident our Best of IBC choices really are the best of IBC! For starters, we don’t decide on our awards before we get to the show. Nor do we choose recipients based on whether they currently advertise in our magazine. But we do have the biggest editorial presence on the ground in Amsterdam, across our TVBEurope and IBC Daily teams. This year we had reporters in every hall of the RAI, and during the show they made recommendations on the cleverest new products in their hall(s) to associate editor David Fox — who as ever did an amazing job compiling and photographing the winning products and reasons why they were chosen, based on personal visits to every winning stand. 2013 sees our biggest ever

Best of IBC list; a total of 81 new products across acquisition, recording workflow, camera support, lighting, audio, production and infrastructure, links, transmission and delivery. A bumper crop, from a bouyant IBC2013 event. It’s not easy compiling a meaningful list of best products from a show with 1400 exhibitors. This is why TVBEurope does not compile a Best of NAB list; we don’t have a big enough team in Las Vegas each year to do it justice. But IBC is our show, and that’s why we’re proud to bring you this

Looking for the next big thing: a buoyant IBC show saw a bumper crop of new products launched, including our 81 ‘Best of IBC’ award winners

pick of the most interesting innovations at IBC2013 — those that can make end-users’ professional lives easier, cheaper and more efficient.

And although IBC is also a

massive talking shop these days — with multiple parallel conference streams and hundreds of speakers on everything from social media to LTE-A Tower Overlays — it’s still essentially driven by the kit on the show floor. What’s new? What’s the

cleverest stuff out there in the aisles? How can it improve my business? It doesn’t have to be big names: although companies like Tokina, Freefly Systems, Syrup, Joseph Fiber, VidiGo, Beamr, Dejero, LGZ (all on our list of Best of IBC award winners) may

not be immediately familiar to every reader in Europe, they’ve got some of the smartest new technology on the market. Or look at the list of finalists

for the IABM’s 2013 Design and Innovation Awards at the show: Axon, Canare, Ericsson, Harris, Ikegami, Dejero and Integrated Microwave Technologies, Nexidia, Scalable Video Systems and Viacess-Orca. You might assume one of the familiar heavyweights like Ericsson, Harris or Ikegami took the prize — right? Wrong: the IABM’s award

went to Canare, for a broadcast standard 75Ohms BNC connector. Canare’s Active BNC should significantly simplify designing a 3G-SDI system with high performance to meet return loss specifications

and with either a built-in cable driver or cable equaliser function. This is the core of IBC:

innovative new technologies for electronic content creation, management and delivery on the show floor, with orders taken and leads generated. Yes there are of course big debating points and we will get to them in our formal November issue IBC Wrap-Up analysis — eg, the cloud, second screen, 4K/UHD, move to IT/IP infrastructures, traditional media vs social media, dynamic broadcast, connected devices, death of SDI and so on. That’s coming up in our next issue: but for now, enjoy the best new products from the show as chosen by our team at IBC2013.
