In and out in a Flash: Yamasaki with Toshiba’s new solid-state server

Touch type: The AWS-750 Anycast Touch is a multi-functional live production system
Toshiba — On-Air Max Flash:This maintenance-free solid-state playout server is highly scalable, and can be expanded from 1 to 30 inputs, and from 2- 40 outputs. The high-speed flash memory storage can go from 1-60TB. Flash “uses less power, is highly reliable, and has a long life cycle compared to disk. The read/write cycle is also very fast. Any speed limit is on the I/O ports, not the memory, which is superior to SSD,” said sales manager Shuko Yamasaki. Its internal multi-converter means that different formats can be selected for each individual output port. The server supports MPEG-2 and AVC-Intra codecs, plus MXF OP1a, and file-based transfers can be played out while they are still being ingested.

Sony — AWS-750 Anycast Touch: This laptop-like all-in-one live production system has touch screens for both its keyboard and display sections, which makes it particularly flexible. As a broadcasting/webcasting system it should be suited to small scale or event productions. It eliminates the need for traditional hardware, such as video switchers, streaming encoders, recorders, audio mixers, titlers and remote camera controllers, and offers 10-bit processing with 1920x1080 output. Its dual screens enable users to split the video and audio controls. It also allows video sources to be stored in scene folders with settings including titles, logos and effects, which can be recalled by touching its thumbnail picture.

VidiGo — Toolbox Skype integration: Broadcasters increasingly use services like Skype to take in live video feeds from remote news contributors, but usually if Skype goes through a scan converter the audio falls out of sync. VidiGo addressed this by integrating Skype into version two of its Toolbox software-based scan converter “instead of grabbing Skype from a screen and putting out SDI. It means you have the return signal as well, and have full control of the client,” explained Reinout Lempers, CCO. It allows you to add a Skype logo (part of the terms of service) and can delay audio (“A Skype call is hardly ever in sync from its origin”), and also control volume.
