TVBEurope 29 Best ofIBC2013: Audio Audio Plug and play: Delec’s double-density Oratis Compact

Delec Audio + Videotechnik — Oratis Compact: This intercom and audio matrix unit has “double the matrix size for a 1U 19-inch rack unit at the same price as the nearest rival”, with up to 120 I/Os in a single rack

space, according to sales engineer Jurgen Malleck. It is designed for small- scale broadcast projects, and there are two choices of matrix frame: the CS 1212 with 12 digital subscriber-unit ports and 12 analogue four-wire ports and the CS 1624 with 16 digital and 24 analogue ports. Both are expandable with an optional AoIP-Dante interface or they can be networked with other Oratis components. www.delec.de

The Only Way is S6: Avid’s scalable S6 Control Surface

Avid — S6 Control Surface: This modular system is designed to offer “intuitive, tactile control of editing and mixing, and the ability to easily work with other artists, engineers, and facilities,” said Chris Gahagan, SVP of products and services at Avid. He claimed it delivers “game-changing modularity, superior ergonomics, and streamlined collaboration to meet mixers’ changing business requirements.” It can simultaneously control multiple Pro Tools and other EUCON-enabled digital audio

workstations over Ethernet, to speed workflows and enable network collaboration as part of a single integrated platform. It is claimed to be flexible and easily scalable, with M10 configurations starting at $21,995 and M40 configurations at $43,480. www.avid.com

Uncompromising: the UpCon is claimed to offer “Cinema-quality stereo to 5.1 upconversion”

TC Electronic — UpCon: This upconverter ensures that a transmission is optimised for 5.1 HD TV, and offers “uncompromising upconversion” and stereo

downmix in a single, high-density rack unit, based on TC’s UnWrap HD algorithm. It continuously monitors the channel format of any incoming audio, and if the signal falls back from true 5.1 to stereo, it can seamlessly cross-fade into a convincing 5.1 surround upconversion without adding any interruptions or artefacts, while maintaining consistent loudness. It comes with one 3G SDI stream as standard, but optional transmission 3G cards can be added for up to three simultaneous SDI streams. www.tcelectronic.com

Cracking good idea: TSL marketing manager Susie Haldar goes to work in an Egg

Esfera offers full 5.1 audio from just

two channels, making it perfect for wireless cameras

Sennheiser — Esfera: This surround microphone system can capture 5.1 surround sound from just two channels, and Sennheiser believes it will be perfect for sport broadcasters, although it won’t be available until March. Audio captured by the SPM 8000 stereo microphone can be carried by two standard microphone cables, then converted into an AES3 signal and routed to the OB van where the rack-mount SBP 8000 processing unit can convert the signal into 5.1. This conversion could also be carried out at the receiving broadcaster, or in post. Because it only requires two channels, it means it is compatible with wireless camera links. www.sennheiser.com

O’Connor: Headphone: X will offer surround sound even in basic in-ear phones

DTS — Headphone X: This promises to deliver a full surround sound experience from ordinary headphones. “We’re trying to take the theatre into your pocket,” said DTS director of marketing Fiona O’Connor. It will emerge as a product in phones and tablets early next year, as Qualcomm is embedding it in its chipsets. “The genius of it is it will be able to work with basic in-ear phones or high-end headphones, although we are working with headphone manufacturers to make the most of it.” Headphone:X does require specific encoding, but only needs one extra channel to deliver 11.1-surround sound. It is already being used for movie soundtracks. www.dts.com

TSL — The Egg: This unusual chair is a single-person Quality Control unit for monitoring 5.1

surround sound and HD video. It would allow broadcasters to easily install an acoustically isolated environment with five full-range loudspeakers and a sub-woofer in a busy master control room, without having to worry about

background noise levels or about causing disturbance for everyone else in the room. The Egg can incorporate video playback, router control, audio control,

Dolby decoding, comms integration, and video server control from a single touchscreen display, depending on the broadcaster’s needs. www.tslproducts.com
