Notre Dame junior attacker Lindsay Powell entered last season with zero starts, zero goals and zero points. As a result, Irish coach Christine
Halfpenny had zero intelligence on the player she inherited upon her arrival in South Bend last year. “We had no fi lm on her, nothing,” Halfpenny said. “I didn’t really know what I was getting.”
After missing her freshman season with a torn right ACL, Powell burst on the scene with a strong sophomore campaign, when she scored 44 goals for Notre Dame, which fi nished 13-5 and made the NCAA tournament.
But during an April 30 practice, Powell again tore an ACL — this time in her left knee — and missed Notre Dame’s two postseason games.
“The advantage is, at the end of the day, she missed [only] two games. Sometimes a knee injury can make you miss half a season,” Halfpenny said. “She made it all the way to the end and then suffered the unfortunate setback.” Following intensive rehab, Powell returned to the playing fi eld in November, less than seven months after her second major knee injury. “She’s a machine,” Halfpenny said. Halfpenny said Powell could
learn from watching the game instead of playing it. ”See things from a different perspective,” she said. Notre Dame lost top attacker Maggie Tamasitis (now an assistant coach at Rutgers) and her 23 goals and 59 assists to graduation. While both Tamasitis and Powell play attack, Halfpenny said Powell will not be asked to play the same way. “We’re asking Lindsay to do what Lindsay does and telling
everyone else around her to make sure they can be as big a threat as possible,” Halfpenny said. In the offseason, Notre Dame hired two new assistant coaches, Jill Byers and Jake Marmul, who had never seen Powell play in person.
“It was pretty fun to watch Jake and Jill when they saw her come back to the fi eld,” Halfpenny said. “When they would watch the highlights, they would be like, ‘Who is that?’ And I said ‘That’s Lindsay Powell.’ They were like ‘Whoa.’ “It’s the reaction I had last year when I saw her play the fi rst time.”
But a lot has changed since Halfpenny saw
Powell for the fi rst time. Now she has fi lm. — Matthew DeFranks
A Publication of US Lacrosse Lindsay Powell RIVAL COACHES SAY
“The Fighting Irish don’t have a fi ghting chance if they continue to get matched up with Northwestern in the fi rst round… Great hire in alumna Byers… When they played us in the spring, they did things we hadn’t seen before… They’re aggressive with their ride and in transition.”
TOP RETURNER M Margaret Smith (Jr.) A third-team All-American,
Smith’s does her best work between the 30s. “Everybody knows who Margaret is, how dangerous she can be, making strong contributions to the fi eld and to our draw unit, having the ability to make some momentum-changing plays,” Halfpenny said.
X-FACTOR M Kaitlyn Brosco (Jr.) After a stellar freshman year (40 points), Brosco’s numbers went down in nearly every category in 2012. If the Long Island product can return to form, she will give the Irish another talented option on offense, “playing that quarterback role for us,” Halfpenny said.
