MARYLAND

2012 RECORD: 19-4 (3-2 ACC) COACH: CATHY REESE (7TH YEAR)

TERRAPINS 4

Maryland does not have a proven goalkeeper or draw specialist. Lucky for the Terps, Tewaaraton Award winner Katie Schwarzmann does everything else better than anyone else in the country. Despite uncertainty in the backfi eld,

Maryland enters the 2013 season as the nation’s fourth-ranked team thanks to an offense that can cover its blemishes with an outstanding group of scorers and feeders. And because of Schwarzmann, who had 72 goals, 22 assists and 52 draw controls in 2012.

“I honestly never thought about winning the Tewaaraton until I came to Maryland,” Schwarzmann said. “When I was a freshman, Cathy told me, ‘Some day you will be a Tewaaraton fi nalist.’ That’s when I started to think about the possibility.” Reese put Schwarzmann on a short list of the Terps’ all-time greats that includes the likes of past Tewaaraton winners Jen Adams (2001) and Caitlyn McFadden (2010), not to mention Kelly Amonte Hiller. “Katie is an amazing

player,” Reese said, “and one of the best to have ever played at Maryland.” Schwarzmann, a returning captain, led the Terps to the NCAA semifi nals with dominant performances in the ACC tournament (11 goals in three games) and NCAA quarterfi nals (eight points and seven draw controls against Loyola).

“She is fast, explosive and one of the top athletes to come through Maryland,” Reese said. And she’s the leader the Terps need. Just look at the goalie situation. Senior Kasey Howard played all of 72 minutes in goal last year. Sophomore teammate Abbey Clipp logged 21 fewer minutes than Howard, leaving some to wonder how Maryland will respond against high-powered offenses early in the season at Syracuse and against Duke.

“While we might be young at some positions, we have a core group of upperclassman who will be looked upon for on-fi eld leadership,” Schwarzmann said. “We will continue to instill confi dence in our goalies and the younger players who will feed off of our experience and trust in them.” It does not hurt to have McFadden back in College Park. She returned to Maryland in August as an assistant coach after two seasons at Florida. “I only played with Caitlyn one year, but you would have never known I was a freshman and she was a senior by the way she treated me,” Schwarzmann said. “I continue to look up to her.”

 RIVAL COACHES SAY “Everyone wants to see Cathy Reese win another one, especially if it’s at the expense of [Syracuse, Northwestern or Florida]. Gotta love the Maryland connection in the top four… They have speed to give teams problems… Question in goal, but defense can usually protect the goalie pretty well.”

 TOP RETURNER M Katie Schwarzmann (Sr.) Schwarzmann’s resume:

Tewaaraton Award winner as the nation’s top collegiate player in 2012 and a current stint with the U.S. national team. Enough said.

 X-FACTOR M Taylor Cummings (Fr.) Maryland must fi nd someone to fi ll the void left by the graduation of Karri Ellen Johnson and her 78 draw controls. The player other than Schwarzmann most likely to take charge on the circle will be Cummings, a two-time Lacrosse Magazine National High School Player of the Year from top-ranked McDonogh School (Md.).
