Since becoming

the fourth Princeton sophomore ever named a fi rst-team All-American, Tom Schreiber hasn’t rested on his laurels. The

junior midfi elder has grown in every aspect — as a player, a leader and a person. It is something the Tigers are counting on as they try to build on the momentum of last year’s 11-5 season, a seven-game improvement over 2011. “If you’re going to get in line behind somebody, I’ll get in line behind him,” Princeton coach Chris Bates said. Schreiber is the rare junior captain at Princeton. Forced into a lead role on the offense as a freshman in 2011, he responded with a third-team All-American and Ivy League Rookie of the Year season. “I kind of got thrown into the fi re a bit with the injuries and being a freshman,” he said. “It helped me grow up.” Schreiber was even better last year, becoming the Tigers’

fi rst 60-point scorer since 2004 and the fi rst player in history to lead Princeton in both goals and assists as a freshman and sophomore.

“He can play defense. He can create transition. He can pick up ground balls. He has incredible vision,” Bates said. “He’s as complete a midfi elder as there is.” Schreiber wants the midfi eld to help more on defense, especially after Rob Castelo suffered a season-ending knee injury in the fall. The Tigers also

graduated four-time All-American goalie Tyler Fiorito, two close defensemen and a long-stick midfi elder. Opponents will get an even heavier dose of Schreiber with on-the-fl y substitutions. “With the [NCAA] rule changes, we’re very comfortable with him going back and playing defense, more like the old traditional midfi elder,” Bates said. “On the other side, he can clear it and wreak some havoc on offense. Instead of just making plays, we’re asking him to have greater ownership of the offense.” Schreiber spent the offseason working on off-ball movement to compliment his role as an initiator. He said the preparation for an increased role as a leader has made him a better person. One week after the Tigers were basking in the sun and surf of Costa Rica on their international trip last summer, Schreiber was in Uganda trying to make an impact through lacrosse with the Fields of Growth international service program. “It’s really a life-changing experience,” Schreiber said. “I got a chance to interact with people that have nothing. I’ve never seen such an appreciation for life from someone that has so little.”

 RIVAL COACHES SAY “With Schreiber and MacDonald, who really developed as a freshman, they’ll have a better concept of Chris Bates’ offense… Princeton got away from what made them Princeton, which was team defense, slide, support and recover. You’ll see a return to that this year, because it’s a new group.”

 TOP RETURNER M Tom Schreiber (Jr.) A fi rst-team All-American in 2012 and Tewaaraton candidate, Schreiber will be asked to do more both ways this year. He also will quarterback the offense from up top, and remains a playmaker and scorer.

 X-FACTOR D Nick Fernandez (Jr.) Rob Castelo’s knee injury means the Tigers have lost last year’s three starting defenseman, plus goalie Tyler Fiorito. Princeton will break up its dynamic LSM duo of Jack Strabo and Fernandez for a close defender. “Nick’s a freak of an athlete,” Bates said. “He’s tough. He has great lateral movement, and he’s as strong as an ox.”

Princeton needs to replace a four-time All- American goalie.
