COLLEGE PREVIEW 2013 NCAA DIVISION I WOMEN TOP

2012 RECORD: 12-7 (3-2 ACC) COACH: KERSTIN KIMEL (17TH YEAR)

DUKE BLUE DEVILS 7

Duke’s defense knows perseverance. Three games into 2012, the Blue Devils lost senior defender Bridget Nolan to a season-ending injury, and by mid-March, Casey Beyel’s senior year was done too. Still, Duke held its opponents to just

8.89 goals per game, good for 10th best nationally. “There’s not just one person that is part of the defensive unit that can save the game,” senior defender Lauren Martin said. “We’re constantly taught to communicate, trust people and hold each other accountable.” Martin and the defense powered the Blue Devils, who ranked just 43rd in scoring offense, to their eighth consecutive NCAA quarterfi nal appearance. The core of that defense — which also includes senior Mie Graham and junior Taylor Virden — returns. Virden and Martin have started together since 2011. Graham became a starter last season. “There’s defi nitely chemistry there,” Duke coach Kerstin Kimel said. The trio has built an even deeper relationship off the fi eld since all three were named captains in the fall. They also will benefi t from the return of sophomore Gabby Moise, a shutdown defender.

But who will replace goalie Mollie Mackler? As a senior, Mackler posted the program’s lowest goals against average since 2006 and was one of just three goalies in the country with more than seven

saves and less than nine goals allowed per game. Duke’s fourth team captain, senior Kaitlin Gaiss, will step into the cage. Gaiss started 13 games as a freshman, giving up her redshirt when Mackler tore her ACL. After two seasons backing up Mackler, Gaiss now has her chance to step back into the starting role.

“If anyone, Kaitlinn Gaiss is the person to be able to handle that seamlessly,” Martin said. “She never became complacent. She learned a lot from Mollie. She’s ready to go again.” Gaiss will face competition from incoming freshman and U.S. U19 team goalie Kelsey Duryea, who’s coming back from an injury. But Geiss has the inside track as a senior. “She has this huge, booming voice,” Graham said. “It’s 5,000 times different than her regular

speaking voice. Hysterical.” Given her defenders’

track record of playing through diffi cult circumstances, Geiss’ voice should be just loud enough to backstop another stout Duke defense.

Taylor Virden  RIVAL COACHES SAY

“Although their style of play is sometimes boring to watch, they have the talent to go deep in May… Trimble proved she was worth all the hype… Kelci Smesko looked really good in the fall… A top recruiting class meshed with key veterans could be the right recipe for success.”

 TOP RETURNER M Maddy Morrissey (Sr.) After a 25-goal season and with the departures of Emma Hamm and Kim Wenger, Morrissey will see an increased role in the Duke attack. “The way she’s trained over the the last two seasons and fall, she’s really ready to step forward and have a great breakout season,” Kimel said.

 X-FACTOR D Gabby Moise (So.) In her fi rst career start last season, Moise held North Carolina’s top scorer Abbey Friend without a goal. Kimel called Moise “the quickest, most athletic kid on our team.” She again will play the role of shutdown defender.
