2012 RECORD: 11-8 (2-3 ACC) COACH: JULIE MYERS (18TH YEAR)

CAVALIERS 8

Julie Myers knew she would have her hands full trying to replace a major portion of the Cavaliers’ offense. The graduation of leading scorer Josie Owen alone would have been a big enough void to fi ll, but Virginia lost three other seniors

who combined for 56 goals. So when Northwestern’s Casey Bocklet, Florida’s Sally Jentis and Georgetown’s Caroline Seats came across the release wires in June, the timing could not have been better. Myers quickly signed the trio of sophomore transfers, and the additions will play integral roles in the Cavaliers’ retooled offense. Bocklet played signifi cant minutes in Northwestern’s win over Syracuse in the NCAA championship game, showcasing her ability to distribute from behind the goal. Jentis and Seats add depth to a young midfi eld. “We were shocked to see their names on the releases coming through,” Myers said. “They came with the right resumes at the right time.”

All three names

were familiar to Myers. She recruited Bocklet and Seats and knew of Jentis, but couldn’t get into the mix before she committed to Florida.

Myers was even more thankful considering she lost two more players to injuries in the fall — junior Katie Slater (27 goals) and sophomore Sloan Warren (26 goals). “It made my decision easier

knowing they were going to be missing a Josie Owen behind the crease and knowing I would be needed on offense, because that’s what I do,” said Bocklet, whose older brother Chris starred at Virginia.

Bocklet brings the most experience of the three transfers after playing in 22 games for Northwestern last year. She netted 13 goals and fi nished second on the team with 22 assists. Seats, an attacking middie, appeared in 13 games for Georgetown, while Jentis, a more defensive-oriented midfi elder, started in six of the 16 games she played for Florida. “Casey coming in is perfect because she likes to play from behind like Josie did, and she’s got a good shot,” sophomore midfi elder Courtney Swan said. “Caroline and Sally can play both ways, and they’ll add a lot of depth to our midfi eld.”

Though all three transfers are still relatively young, Myers hopes their experience at high- profi le programs will help. “They are new to us, but they are absolutely experienced second- years,” she said. “They will develop big roles, but they are ready for that.”

 RIVAL COACHES SAY “Addition of Casey Bocklet softens the blow of Josie Owen’s graduation, but I’m not sure they have the fi repower to stay in the top 10, despite having one of the top goalies… They’ve had our number. It’s always a different way we’re getting beat, and it’s always a different person.”

 TOP RETURNER D Megan Dunleavy (Sr.) A captain and third-year

starter, Dunleavy is the most experienced fi eld player on a team dominated by sophomores. She leads a defensive unit that returns all of its starters, and she had an especially strong fall.

 X-FACTOR A Casey Bocklet (So.) With Josie Owen gone, the Cavaliers “needed an attacker like Casey Bocklet who could really come and try to run the show,” Myers said. The Northwestern transfer is new to the program but brings experience to a rebuilt offense after playing 22 games with the NCAA champion Wildcats.
