More than 150 points of

offensive production sit side-by- side in Colgate’s locker room, which was rearranged this fall by position group instead of jersey numbers. Attention

quickly turns to Tewaaraton Award winner Peter Baum’s 97, but perhaps it should focus on his locker mate Ryan Walsh’s 60. Walsh’s success — and avoiding the so-called sophomore slump — will be key to Colgate’s improving upon the best season in school history. “Now I get to see Ryan all the time,” Baum said. “Sometimes he sleeps in front of my locker, which is annoying, but brotherly love.” Walsh, the 6-foot-4 and 217-pound attackman from Long Island, was the Patriot League’s Rookie of the Year after totaling 38 goals and 22 assists in 2012. It’s hard to believe Walsh, whom Baum said has “a more well-rounded game than I did at that age,” didn’t receive more attention before landing at Colgate. “Ryan had a

tendency to take some plays off,” Raiders coach Mike Murphy said, “and his unorthodox style scared some teams off.” Now Walsh, whom Murphy described as a “moose of a man, a load, a beast on the lefty corner, yet surprisingly nimble for his size,” scares other defensive coordinators. When Baum was slowed

by Duke in the NCAA quarterfi nals, Walsh scored a hat trick in Colgate’s 17-6 loss. “Ryan took Mike Manley to the rack a couple times,” Murphy said, “and it was like, ‘Whoa. Those are some big-boy dodges.’” Murphy relayed a story from the fall, when the team’s trainers held out Walsh for a week with a minor injury. “Walking back from the weight room with Ryan, he said, ‘Coach, when you are doing it, you don’t want to do it. But when you can’t do it, it’s all you want to do,’” Murphy said. “I said, ‘Ryan, you just made a big discovery about life.’ His motor is starting to catch up to his game.”

The same can be said for Colgate. Being ranked in Lacrosse Magazine’s preseason poll for the fi rst time and returning the reigning national player of the year brings additional expectations. “We’ve got this bull’s-eye on us,” said

Murphy, who spent seven years as an assistant at Army and grew up the son of a Marine Corps colonel. “My dad always said to me, ‘You may have Plan A, but what happens when the bullets start fl ying? You better have Plan B.’ We’re ready for it.”

 RIVAL COACHES SAY “They return America’s best player, Peter Baum. And he has a good supporting cast starting with the big lefty Walsh. Are they ready to play with the top? (See Duke in playoffs.)… Huge questions in goal, as well as if the defense can improve… Who will replace Jeff Ledwick at midfi eld?”

 TOP RETURNER A Peter Baum (Sr.) The reigning Tewaaraton

Award winner reminds Murphy of former Army star John Walker and Duke standout Ned Crotty for his athleticism and ability to dodge from anywhere. “He’s very much got Michael Jordan in him. He can score as many points as we need. But we want him to have a Magic Johnson-kind of role, making everyone around him better,” Murphy said.

 X-FACTOR D Bobby Lawrence (Jr.) The 5-foot-11, 218-pounder held Maryland’s Owen Blye and UMass’ Will Manny to a combined one goal. “A lot of people were scratching their head as to how he didn’t get All-American,” Baum said.”
