Coaching

KEEPING THE FLOW In uncertain times all businesses feel the pressure of a global recession, and motivation is key in getting

the best from any organisation. We shared reader’s questions with the International Coach Federation's CEO/Executive Director Magdalena Mook to put you on the right track.

How can working with a business coach change the way I think as a business leader and enable me to put plans in place that take both me and my company to the next level? Dave Leadbetter, London.

Magdalena Mook - A coach will work with you to unlock any untapped potential—and can give you new perspectives to consider when it comes to how you think as a business leader. They will inspire and encourage you through the questions they ask and the actionable goals you co-create. A professional coach will help keep you accountable in reaching your goals, which will take you to the next level of productivity and effectiveness. Additionally, when you face the challenging situations that go hand-in-hand with leadership, a coach will support you to con- fidently pursue new ideas and alternative solu- tions with greater resilience and resourcefulness.

I want to stand back and look at my whole life, work and home, with someone who has no axe to grind other than my development as a human being. Is coaching right for me? Mal O’Reilly, Ireland.

M M -Very possibly—a professional coach can work with you to discover, clarify, and align with whatever you want to achieve. Their job is to provide the support you need to enhance your already existing skills, resources and creativity. They will work with you to generate solutions and strategies to reach your goals—be it reaching your business targets or balancing work and life. To determine if coaching is for you, begin by summarizing what you hope to accomplish through coaching. If you have a fairly clear idea of your desired outcome, a coaching partnership can be a useful tool for developing strategy for how to achieve your desired outcome with

greater ease. Likewise, ask yourself if you find collaboration beneficial (coaching is a partner- ship), and if you have the time to make real changes in your work or life (it will involve work on your part). My company is expanding all the time. Can a business coach help me manage the growth process, the building of a managerial team and the challenges of balancing my own role as founder director, leader of the business and key account manager? Peter Hobbs, London.

M M - Professional coaching can certainly help you in this regard. Coaching is an important modality for managing change—including growth and balancing multiple roles within an organisation. Professional coaches are trained to work with the client to maximize the potential that already exists within the client. It helps the client assess current needs, opportunities and challenges. From there, the coaching partnership determines goals and establishes desired out- comes. A coach will help you sort through what you need to do to reach your desired outcomes.

How is business coaching different from some of the other training and mentoring programmes that I’ve done before within the workplace?

Franck Lehmann, Frankfurt.

M M - Professional coaching is a distinct serv- ice that focuses on an individual’s life as it re- lates to goal setting, outcome creation, and personal change management. It is a forward looking process. Unlike a trainer setting learning objectives, the client sets objectives with guid- ance from the coach. Coaching does not follow
