GÄVLEBORG IN SWEDEN


With its wealth of unspoilt natural environments and cultural heritage, Gävleborg has significant growth potential for tourism. Tourism has developed into one of the fastest growing industries in Gävleborg and accounts for a turnover of about SEK 2.5 billon a year. Visitors spend more than 4 million guest nights here and there are over 2000 all-year em- ployees within the regional tourism industry. In Gävleborg there are great opportunities for investors. Investments are needed, especially to meet demand for accommodation, as well as natural, cultural and children's activities.


TOURISM IN SWEDEN Sweden is an attractive tourism destination. Vis- itor volumes and international visitor revenues have more than doubled over a five-year period and are expected to double again by 2020. The increasing demand from both Swedish trav- elers and international guests and the fact that the market is underdeveloped, creates great op- portunities for investors and businesses.


TOURISM IN GÄVLEBORG Gävleborg has four seasons. Two of the seasons are more touristic distinct – summer and winter – which both offer a wide range of indoor- and outdoor activities and experiences. In the sum- mer season there are a lot of nature and wildlife activities. In the wintertime skiing is very pop- ular. The region has three down-hill resorts and numerous cross-country tracks. Gävleborg also has a rich cultural heritage, including an industrial heritage with several well-preserved locations, and its renowned Swedish Farmhouses of Hälsingland (Hälsingegårdarna). Seven of the Farmhouses be- came UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2012. The travel and tourism industry in Gävle-


borg has a turnover of SEK 2.5 billion a year, employs about 2000 all-year employees and have over 4 million guest nights a year. Ap- proximately 900 000 are commercial guest nights. The goal for the region 2018 is to double the commercial guest nights to 1.8 million. Gävleborg has recently begun targeting the

international tourist market, as part of a project together with Visit Sweden. The key markets for Gävleborg are Finland, the Netherlands, Nor- way, Denmark and Germany.


INFRASTRUCTURE Gävleborg is easily accessible. Arlanda Airport, with access for the whole world, is only 60 min- utes away from the region. From Stockholm the region is reachable in 180 minutes. E4 runs through the region north-south and south-north and E16 leads west towards Norway.

RECENT TOURISM INVESTMENT PROJECTS IN GÄVLEBORG Region Gävleborg manages a tourism development project, which invests substantial funds to develop the industry. Large private


investments are also being made, such as at the Kungsberget Ski Resort, Destination Järvsö and Mackmyra Svensk Whisky Distillery.


- Kungsberget Ski Resort, Sandviken The 6-hectare resort, 25km northwest of Sand- viken, is one of Sweden’s best snow parks, with 19 slopes and 10 lifts, several restaurants and newly constructed lodge accommodation for 2,500 overnight visitors. www.kungsberget.se


- Destination Järvsö A large visitor and tourist destination is being established in Järvsö, Ljusdal municipality. The town has a Nordic Animal Park and a ski centre. www.jarvzoo.se / www.jarvsobergscykelpark.se


- Mackmyra Svensk Whisky Distillery, Gävle Mackmyra Svensk Whisky Village has recently been established in the forest on the outskirts of Gävle. The village includes a 37 m high whisky distillery, warehouse and a restaurant. www.mackmyra.com


- Elite Grand Hotel, Gävle


Elite Hotels opened a new 123-room hotel in a historical building in central Gävle in 2012. www.elite.se
