With over 40 years of experience in the nail industry, IBDis still going strong. Thismonth,GuildNews takes a look back at the history of the brand through to themodern day.


IBD first began in 1971 with the aim of setting the standards for salon innovation and excellence in professional Gel systems and have spent 40 years doing so with success. Now in 2012, IBD continue to develop and introduce what they believe to be top quality products to the market.


Since its conception, the brand has spread to over 50 countries through distributor partnerships, including North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.


In the UK, Grafton International bought the sole distribution rights to IBD fromAmerican International Industries (aii) in 2000. “aii is a leading manufacturer and distributor of innovative, quality beauty and skin care products for men and women in America. Grafton International now manages the brand in-house and has a full marketing, PR, brand and strategic planning team who make executive decision with a vast amount of influence on the brand in the UK,” says Laura Hughes, Education Manager at Grafton International.

From humble beginnings IBD developed a full product range going from a solely Gel Resin manufacturer to enjoying success as a leading manufacturer of Gels, Adhesive and UV light activated products.


“The 70s saw IBD invent two of the industry’s most famed products,” says Laura. “Globally the nail tip and 5 second nail glue stands out as two of the biggest milestones in the nail industry with IBD revolutionising both and bringing them to the market.


“[IBD] has introduced top quality products and continuously researched new technology since the company established in 1970. IBD’s latest offering is a new highly competitively priced nail lacquer, and 8.5ml bottle


for £2 trade price, in a wide variety of colours offering the market something truly tempting at a great price point.”


Today, the brand’s best selling product is their recently launched Just Gel Polish, a 100% gel polish.

IBD believe that they are the leading manufacturer of Gels, Adhesives and UV light activated products. So to what to they owe this success?Well, they believe that it is due to their power in the market as innovators.


Throughout the 40 years in business, those at IBD also believe that the brand has held its place in the market. “Through constant innovation IBD manage to retain a market advantage, a combination of strict industry standards combined with this constant desire to be innovative makes for wonderfully harmonious drive to be a front runner in its industry. One of the first to bring a 100% Gel product to the market saturated with hybrids and after a rigorous R+D program has given IBD a vantage point amongst competitors,” explains Laura. IBD also stress the importance of education and as such have well over 160 educators worldwide who are salon professionals that are determined


1970s - IBD invented the first 5 second nail glue and also produced the first nail tip in the industry.


1980s - IBD innovated Gel by bringing builder gel to the market with nomess, no odours, and no consistency problems.This included colour overlays and creates a permanently shiny, durable, natural looking nail. IBD also founded Gel Resins in the professional nail industry.


1990s - IBD developed and extended their current Gel range.The range now included clear gel topcoats and customblended French collections, enabling the technician to sculpt and perfect a smile linemore easily.
