overwhelming to think how much they give to you, especially as a small business.”

And what is it about Dean & Smedley thatmakes this salon a special place to work?

“I’ve been here for nine years, that’s a long time for a therapist to work somewhere but we have a very low turnover of staff because it’s a family business. It’s a nice atmosphere to work in, everyone’s really friendly, you feel like you want to be here that long – it’s gone by in a flash and I could be here for another nine years without even thinking about it.”

How does being part of a Pharmacy help the beauty salon?

“The Clarins sales consultants downstairs have all of the product knowledge so clients can go down to them to purchase their products, whilst we have the NVQs and Diplomas for the treatments.

“Plus we are lucky because we have the backing of the other products that are sold downstairs, for example we can use Dior or Guerlain for make-up on Brides. They have also recently introduced L’Occitane. So not only do we have good products upstairs, we have really good products downstairs too and I think that’s what makes us a little bit more unique; it’s like a small department store, very niche for Ashby.”

How have yours and the salon’s ethos helped in winning the award?

“We treat every client as an equal but also as an individual. It doesn’t matter who is coming in, I should be exactly the same with all clients but you will have individual needs that I can tailor make a treatment to suit. I want to make you feel comfortable, and enjoy it and relax.

“It is all about how you set the scene, the best feedback from the test shop was ‘the bed was really comfortable, the towels were fluffy and it was the most professionally given but natural treatment.’ It was just really nice, that’s the reason why I get up in the morning and come and do my job.

“Winning the award came down to the test shop, but if I didn’t have the backing of the receptionist who booked it, the Sales Consultant downstairs, the girls who helped me set up that day – it’s not just about me, I have the best team who helped through the journey.”

To celebrate Dean & Smedley winning Gold Salon of theYear, Clarins have created a limited edition exclusive facial treatment. The Clarins Hot StoneMelting Honey Facial is a highly personalised, results-driven facial suitable for all skin types. It incorporates a deeply relaxing hot stone décolleté massage, which instead of using traditional basalt stones, features individually shaped, heat releasing and energising marble and slate stones, to gently release tension and calm mind and body.

My one hour facial began with a consultation, where Caroline analysed my skin and identified my key concerns of an oily forehead and T-zone. The treatment began with a preparatory relaxation using Clarins Eau Dynamisante and Clarins Body Treatment Oil, washing my feet and taking me in a state of total relaxation. My face was cleansed with Clarins PureMelt Cleansing Gel, followed by ClarinsPro double exfoliation. Skin was refreshed with Clarins Toning Lotion and an eye product was applied to protect and decongest this delicate area.

Next the delicious ClarinsPro HoneyMassage Gel was applied to my décolleté with a light Clarins Touch effleurage massage to help drain my lymphatic system and boost blood circulation. TheMassage Gel is rich in relaxing aromatic essential oils, and when worked onto the skin transforms into a light but non-greasy oil. Caroline then used the hot stones to carry out a soothing massage to my neck, shoulders and décolleté.

Following this dreamy massage, Clarins Touch wave massage was applied to my face with Clarins Face Treatment Oil and a dry scalp massage released any tension that I was still holding onto.A mask was then applied, and the treatment concluded with an application of Clarins serum, eye and my regular Clarins HydraQuench Rich Cream. Pure bliss!
