7 steps to implementing EMRs 1

Review the needs of the practice. Decide why the practice is making the switch. Get input from the staff. Decide who will input the records.

2

Choose a champion. Pick someone who is excited about the project. Pick someone who is computer-savvy. Pick someone who is respected by the staff.

3 Make a plan. Determine the budget.

Determine who will input information. Look at workflow. Decide which paper records should be scanned into the system.

4 Decide whether you need a consultant. This is a big undertaking. Do you have the staff, the time and the

knowledge to purchase a system and implement it? Maybe your champion needs some coaching.

5 Choose a vendor. Preview systems.

Talk with users. Ask good questions. Do not be taken in by the bells and whistles. Will the EMR system integrate with current PM software?

Training and acceptance The staff must be properly trained in the system if it is going to work.

Just do it. Pick a date, and stop using paper.
