Champion the cause Choose an EMR champion in the prac-

tice to spearhead the effort, says Becky Jones, MBA, hospital director of the North Florida Animal Hospital. Choose someone who will be involved in the selection process as well as the imple- mentation. The champion will help gen- erate excitement about the project and help train the staff. The right person is not always a veterinarian. “It is always a good idea to have a champion for any cause,” Jones says, because that person can help get staff buy-in for the idea. Staff must support the idea for it to be successful, and bring- ing the staff along can take time. Nancy M. Lorenzi, MLS, MA, PhD, a

professor of biomedical informatics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, says that the best predictor for the suc- cess or failure of a project implementa- tion is whether you have a champion.

“A project champion should be some-

one who can explain why this is impor- tant,” says Smith-Akin. “It has to be someone who is trusted and respected. That trust and respect is very important. Choose someone who can communicate clearly to the staff and explain what is happening and why.” Once you know what you want and

you have investigated several EMR sys- tems, you can ask the company sales representatives to give you a demon- stration. Do not be dazzled by the bells and whistles, the experts warn. Make sure the EMR system provides the basic information you need to capture to take care of your patients and that it is easy to use. Remember, this is the backbone of your practice. Yes, it is nifty that you can call up a

patient chart on your smartphone in an emergency, but is that really the way you want to read patient charts all the time?
