On the Move A

A fully equipped mobile veterinary clinic, manufactured by Dodgen Mobile Technologies. Photos courtesy of Dodgen Mobile Technologies. Mobile veterinarians often drive hundreds

of miles each week to care for animals large and small, and they wouldn’t have it any other way. by Kelly Smith

mobile veterinarian prac- tice can consist of every- thing from one veterinarian in a minivan or sport utility vehicle to a team of practi-

tioners in state-of-the-art specialty vehi- cles that can cost upward of six figures. Clients choose a mobile veterinarian

for a variety of reasons. For some, the stress of transporting a small animal or difficulty for the owner to drive or travel makes a mobile veterinarian an attrac- tive choice. For others, the logistics of moving large animals, livestock or mul- tiple animals means that a mobile vet is a necessity. Some practices operate solely from

the mobile clinic, whereas others may use a mobile service in addition to the traditional brick-and-mortar building. Some mobile practices cater to a rela- tively small urban area, treating house pets and exotics, whereas others range for miles, seeing large animals, livestock and more. Regardless of its size or configuration,

each one has a unique story to tell. Read on as we visit with several mobile vet- erinarians, and then learn a little more about starting your own mobile practice.
