he UK is by far the largest offshore wind market in the world represent- ing over half of all installed offshore wind capacity in Europe, partly be-

cause the UK has the best wind resources in Eu- rope, both onshore and offshore. Environmental conditions mean that areas off the coast of the UK offer a theoretical potential ‘harvest’ of 1,000TWh every year. Expansion of the market is driven by a sup- portive government, a series of leasing rounds alongside an infrastructure and natural environ- ment conducive to offshore wind. These driv- ing forces have been made possible by a series

adapting to help the industry grow. Many of the UK wind farms have been built using UK ports and one of the key success factors in establish- ing the UK’s lead in offshore wind capacity will be the availability of facilities capable of sup- porting the industry. It’s estimated that the value of wind farm construction work available to UK ports alone could be as much as £1 billion in the period up to 2020. The result has seen increas- ing competition to gain a slice of this new busi- ness opportunity.

Supported by skilled engineering, offshore sector workforce and a supply chain, within the UK there are also a number of Centres of

market offers a range of revenue and supply chain opportunities. With 40% of EU wind cap- ture capacity and the largest project portfolio in the world, the UK provides appealing opportuni- ties in design, build, maintenance and operation. As of January 2012, 18 offshore wind farms had been built around the UK coastline, equat- ing to 636 turbines representing c2,094 MW of installed capacity, the highest capacity in the world and more than double that of its nearest competitor Denmark.

Excellence, such as the National Renewable En- ergy Centre, which provide support and expertise to companies operating within the sector. With wind farms expected to deliver 40GW by 2030, this presents exceptional business op- portunities. Industry growth expectations are fu- elled by the scale of projects, making investment in UK manufacturing for the long term hugely viable.

The UK Government is supporting the

growth of offshore wind and relevant supply chain areas via a roadmap, industry focused ini- tiatives and through a series of leasing rounds for offshore wind farm installations supported by the Crown Estate. The UK is very much open for business. With one of the most flexible labour markets in
