azakhstan’s Air Astana saw rev- enues grow by 13% to $394 mil- lion, matched by a similar increase in passenger numbers,
although net profit declined to $4.95 million for the first half of 2012. Capacity grew by 11% with an additional Boeing 757-200 joining the fleet as well as three additional Embraer 190s. The fleet size now stands at 26 after the retire- ment of three of its six Fokker 50s, with the re- mainder due for retirement by January 2013. Two
further E190s will be delivered later in the year. New routes were launched from Astana to Omsk in Southeast Russia and from Astana to Tashkent and from Astana to Baku. Domestic capacity grew with the introduction of services from Astana to Shymkent in southern Kaza- khstan, and from Astana to Aktau in western Kazakhstan. From Almaty, a new route was added to Kazan in southern Russia. New routes planned for the 2013 are Almaty to Ho Chi Minh City and Atyrau to Moscow. New flights from Astana to Beijing will com- pliment the existing Almaty to Beijing services also by the end of August. In addition to these new routes, the national air carrier of Kaza- khstan continues to increase capacity on a num- ber of existing routes. Services between Almaty and Urumqi, western China, increased from three times a week to daily service on 1st August 2012; whist services from Astana to Urumqi will increase from twice weekly to four times a week from 17th September 2012.
