Meet Patrick! REGIONAL NEWS

All BHS County Committees hold their Annual Meetings during October so please do check the Dates section to find out what is happening in your county. There are some great talks and demos planned following the business part of the meetings and we really like to meet our members. It is so useful to hear what you would like us to deliver for you, and for you to tell us what we have been doing right or wrong, so we can plan our programme of events for 2013. We are also always really pleased to welcome new volunteers on to our committees either in a particular role or to help out generally at events and with new ideas. Do check the vacancies - we look forward to seeing you soon!

Patrick had an awful start in life and was dumped on a roadside in County Durham when he was less than 24 hours old. There was no sign of his mother and nobody knows what happened to her. He was taken in by the BHS and since then he has needed bottle feeding every 2 hours because attempts to find him a foster mum didn’t work. The BHS does not rescue horses but the BHS Board of Trustees have agreed that we can keep Patrick in our care and ongoing he will be a mascot for our Indiscriminate Breeding campaign as well as helping us to promoted good horse care and welfare. There are still a few places left on the Di Lampard Show Jumping Clinic which will be taking place in November, but they’re filling up fast.

‘Improving Rider Confidence’ was the topic of the latest Continual Professional Development update Training day which was attended by 29 BHS Registered Instructors and was presented by Jenny Ward, BHSI at Moulton College in Northamptonshire. The morning was spent in the classroom with group discussions geared towards finding ways of engaging with the rider and allowing the rider to take control of their goals, with the emphasis on coaching as opposed to instructing. In the afternoon, a group of willing guinea pigs from the College were coached in flat and jumping sessions by members of the group of attendees who put themselves forward, with Jenny offering guidance and advice and discussing how to deal with potential situations which can arise
