Charlotte Bird’s Jumping Column
Hi everyone,
During the holidays, I was mainly working on Woody’s fitness at home. We’ve started to do a lot more pole work and intense schooling sessions, and I’m now jumping Woody just once a week to keep him really fresh and excited for shows.
Woody is coping well with the grass, and he hasn’t put on any weight, we’re very pleased with how he is doing, and so is our field officer. Our diet plan has really worked well for Woody.
On the 1st September, we went to Grange Wood Farm in Swadlincote, Derbyshire for Jump Cross!
Jump Cross is an excellent way of training both horse & rider in the art of cross country riding. Woody has never tried Jump Cross before, but we thought we’d give it a go. After seeing a Jump Cross training session televised with trainer Jeanette Brakewell, I’ve always wanted to try it out. We received a lot of support to try it from fellow rider, Paige Staff, who is also sponsored by
Charlotte & Woody
British Horse Feeds with her two ponies, Magic Moments II and Supernova Starlight.
When we arrived, we tacked up quickly and headed out onto the course, where our riding was assessed by our trainer, Rebecca Kirkland. Rebecca watched us warm-up, do some schooling, and eventually some good-sized practise fences. We then went out onto the course, and we were met immediately by a huge open space. The grounds were enormous and I’m sure all Woody was thinking was ‘’GRASS!!’’. But, Woody definitely had his mind set in the right gear that day as he was fantastic throughout. The first challenge of the day was an upright fence, where you had to jump over it and ride into a woodland area, which was a bit darker and scarier for some horses. We then had to ride over another upright and over to a large oxer to finish. Rebecca told me that the horses in the group would get two strides in the distance, and that ponies would get around three or four. Woody has quite a small stride so I was expecting him to get around three. But no, Woody steamed over the first fence and the second, getting TWO strides into the double and doing a huge jump over the oxer! He almost catapulted me out of the saddle. His big jumps really are a favourite with the crowd! We then moved on to the water complex. Woody and I have never ridden, let alone jumped through water before! I rode very confidently, and Woody was great, he walked, trotted, cantered and even jumped in and out of the water! I was very proud of him.
Next we moved on to jump a narrow skinny, on a dog leg,
Woody

around the corner, where we had to jump another oxer, and then over to another oxer where we had to jump out onto the open grounds, then a right hand turn over an upright and through the finish posts. It was very technical but also very enjoyable and great to be doing something new.
Overall I was very pleased with how Woody went. He was a star that day and we both really enjoyed it. This year I am going to do some more Jump Cross training and a competition too. I
can’t wait!
Over the next few months we have got a couple more shows planned, one at Arena UK and maybe the Halloween show there too.
If you would like to view our daily updates, you can go over to the British Horse Feeds Facebook Page, and you can read our blogs on their website too! This month, the Speedi-Beet Team will also be having a meet up at the British Horse Feeds factory, I can’t wait! I am definitely going to take my camera. It will be nice to meet everyone and have a chat with British Horse Feeds in person, they’re doing so much to help Woody and me by providing monthly bags of feed and clothing. It’s really helpful as with so many competitions and outings, money can become a bit short. I would like to thank British Horse Feeds for this year so far, and everything they have done for us.
