The Sheepgate Under 25’s British Dressage Championships

2012 hasn’t got off to the best summer season for many equestrian activities so the Sheepgate Team were delighted to have been blessed with glorious sunshine for the majority of the week of the prestigious six day championship at the Lincolnshire venue recently.

A record number of entries were received with over 250 combinations and nearly 1100 tests being performed over the six days. Sheepgate’s organiser Sarah Payne has worked hard with her small team to allow the show to run as smoothly as it did this year. Always on the lookout for new ideas, the inclusion of a grand prix class this year as well as the evening entertainment with dog agility allowing riders to swop their horses for dogs and have a go, was huge fun and very well supported, as well as the evening zumba session that got everyone on their feet, after the introduction of it last year it was back by popular demand!

Local riders performed very well to dominate some of the major classes.

Local rider and nail technician Victoria Glasow from Spilsby had a busy week with many successes on her two rides. Starting the week riding her own eleven-year- old, 17.2hh gelding Wilumait who has fairly recently returned to the competition arena having been sidelined through injury and fresh from their win at the British Dressage regionals only a few weeks previously, they took the honours in the Ariat Advanced Medium Championship.

Her second ride, partnering Lynn and Nick Savage’s Abel IV, a 16.3hh seven-year-old gelding who she has been riding since June 2011, after the early days of competing at prelim level she is delighted to have progressed up to medium level. They took second place in the Hoof Prints Elementary semi final and fifth place in the final before securing a very creditable second place in the Gersemi Medium championship.

Trained by Ian Woodhead and Kate Lewis she was delighted with the horse’s progress through the week. Sophie Young riding her own Atos, a 16hh skewbald gelding who she has owned since he was a three-year-old, scored consistently well in the elementary classes to take second place in the Sue Carson Saddles Elementary followed by a win the following day in the Bossy’s Bibs Elementary.

Jess Griffiths and her own DHI Blitserlady, who is also known as ‘The Princess’ secured their place in the Equetech Novice Championship and the Hoof Prints Elementary Championship after competing in the semi finals for each class before taking 7th place in the hotly contested Equetech Novice Championship. Equine Body Worker, Emma Jablonski, secured 10th place with her own Cor IV Z having ridden at these championships for many years, she has also enjoyed regional successes this year.

Charlotte Fry was in outstanding form with her string of horses. Starting the week with her stunning pony stallion Andexer, she secured the title of the BDSC Pony Champion followed by victory in the freestyle to music which was sponsored by Mrs Juliet Horne as well as securing the Schockemohle sponsored rug for the highest percentage scored daily.

Riding Mr Connor’s 24-year- old Ghandi, the confident partnership with Charlotte was clear to see by taking the honours in the advanced medium freestyle to music in convincing style. As if that wasn’t enough, she then went on to dominate the Hoof

The prize fund for this show was impressively close to the value of £10,000 in cash and prizes in kind over the six days and the Sheepgate Team are sincerely grateful to the fantastic support shown by their sponsors, without whom this show wouldn’t be possible.
