4. POMPEII, THEN A SLICE OF LOCAL LIFE Travel first class from Rome to Naples aboard a high-speed train; upon arrival, you’re off to Pompeii. When Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, the city was buried under tons of hot ash. Pompeii disappeared until 1748, when it was “discovered,” and excavations began. A guided walk takes you through its ancient streets; you’ll be able to clearly imagine what life might have been like here in the first century. Following lunch, we’ll drive to Sorrento on the Bay of Naples and visit Agriturismo La Galatea where you’ll see how olives are pressed and mozzarella cheese is made from buffalo milk. Then make your very own pizza with help from a local expert! Over dinner, enjoy Neapolitan music and learn to dance a Tarantella! Meals BLD
5. THE ISLE OF CAPRI & ON TO SORRENTO A jet boat cruise whisks you across the Gulf of Naples to the Isle of Capri; hop in a private convertible “taxi” for a drive along a narrow, cliffside road to the town of Anacapri. Check out the views on a funicular ride to the highest point on the island or enjoy the town as you like. After lunch, you’ll have a bit of time to explore on your own, then take the funicular down to the pier to board a jet boat to Sorrento. Later, join your Tauck Director for a walk through Sorrento’s medieval maze of cobblestone streets. Stop at a local gelataria, where you can see how gelato is made – and of course enjoy a tasting – before returning to your hotel and an evening at leisure. Meals BL
6. THE AMALFI COAST, A CRUISE & MORE A drive along the Amalfi coastline rises, falls, twists and turns far above the sea. In Positano, clinging to cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, take a walking tour before boarding a private boat for a cruise to Amalfi for a completely different view of the coast. Have lunch on your own and spend some free time in Amalfi; if you wish, learn about an age-old art at the Museum of Paper Making. We’ll return to Sorrento late this afternoon for a farewell reception and barbecue dinner tonight. Meals BD
