5.  EXPLORE GRÍMSEY ON THE ARCTIC CIRCLE Scantly populated and tiny, cliffs on Grímsey Island provide breeding sites for seabirds. A walking tour ashore introduces arctic terns, the longest-distance migrating birds on Earth, whimsical puffins, and the Arctic Circle, the imaginary line marking the southern limit of the Arctic Region. 6.  CULTURE, FROM AKUREYRI TO GODAFOSS Cruise the Eyjarfjördur fjord to Akureyri, a town boasting views of snow-tipped mountains and some of the warmest weather in the country. Guided sightseeing takes you to Namaskard, the mysterious volcanic rock formations of Dimmuborgir (Dark Castles) and the farming hamlet of Skútustadir. After lunch at a local restaurant, follow the Ring Road to the powerful Godafoss waterfalls and take a brief tour of Akureyri. Meals BLD


7.  ISAFJORDUR, OFF THE BEATEN TRACK Rugged fjord scenery sets the stage for your visit to Isafjordur and a day of cultural discoveries. Visit the “church on the hill” in Bolungarvik and a fisherman’s hut at Osvor Museum. Back in Isafjordur, visit the Maritime Museum and then cruise to Vigur Island for a sampling of traditional refreshments. Meals BLD


8. GEOTHERMAL WONDERS / JOURNEY HOME Nature impresses on a drive past Kleifarvatn Lake, through the geothermal fields of Krysuvik-Solfataras and the village of Grindavik. Continue to the Blue Lagoon, a geothermally powered spa where, schedule permitting, you can take a dip before a farewell lunch. Visit the Viking Museum and Islendingur, a replica of an ancient Viking vessel, en route to the airport. Tour ends: 2:00 PM at Reykjavik’s Keflavik International Airport.
