A TASTE OF COUNTRY LIFE IN UMBRIA Travel from Rome through the lush countryside of Lazio and Umbria to the town of Orvieto; enjoy a guided visit to Orvieto’s 14th-century Gothic cathedral, one of Italy’s greatest, followed by time to have lunch on your own in town. Spend the next two nights in Umbria’s capital of Perugia at the Hotel Brufani Palace, a landmark luxury hotel in Perugia’s historic center. Meals BD
5. ASSISI, UMBRIA & A WINE TASTING In medieval Assisi, a wealthy merchant’s son renounced the material world for a life of poverty and charity. Visit the Basilica di San Francesco, built to honor the town’s most famous son, St. Francis, whose tomb lies within; view the basilica’s frescoes with a local guide. Attend a wine tasting and lunch at the osteria of a famed Torgiano winery, then return to Perugia. Meals BL
6. SIENA & ON TO FLORENCE Make your way through idyllic Tuscan landscapes to Siena, where you’ll join a local guide for a walking tour including the Duomo, Siena’s black-and-white cathedral, and the frescoes of the Piccolomini Library; see the Piazza del Campo, where the city’s famed horse race, the Palio, is run twice yearly. Continuing to Florence, visit the Galleria dell’Accademia, Europe’s oldest art school and home of Michelangelo’s statue of David. Tonight, a lecture by an art historian enlightens and inspires. RENAISSANCE TREASURES OF FLORENCE The city of Florence has been called the birthplace of the Renaissance; a walk through landmark sites with a local expert followed by a tour of the famed Uffizi Gallery shows you why.
