The Good Toy Guide is a new online resource providing expert insight on play and toys, with explanations about how play helps children develop. The website is due to launch on September 11th, and here’s everything you need to know about how you can get involved...
HOW ARE TOYS EVALUATED? Toys are evaluated in play clubs, with specially trained staff observing how children play with the toys on at least four separate occasions.
This gives unbiased, robust insight into the toys – valuable to manufacturers and retailers, as well as helping consumers make informed choices about the toys and activities they encourage their children to play with. Toys are evaluated all year round and the guide is updated regularly. There is also a monthly ‘Spotlight on...’ feature, highlighting different types of play and toys to provide more in-depth insight into the links between play and healthy child development.
THE PROCESS The guide finds toys to evaluate in three different ways:
The team scouts for good toys to test – watch out for them in local toy shops. If the product is successful it will be featured on the website and the manufacturer will be given the oppportunity to purchase theevaluation report and the licence to use the logo.
Toy manufacturers submit toys with an entry fee evaluation – this gives the manufacturer ultimate control over timings as the guide prioritises the testing of these toys, and provides the evaluation report as soon as the testing has been completed. Successfully evaluated toys submitted with the fee in advance also receive a one-year licence to use the Good Toy Guide seal of approval on their products and publicity.

SEPTEMBER 2012
Toy companies and members of the public can send toys speculatively. As before, if the product is successful it will be featured on the website and the manufacturer will be given the opportunity to purchase the evaluation report and the licence to use the logo.
After evaluation, toys are generally donated to the play clubs and products that are surplus to testing requirements may be donated to children’s charities or given away as competition prizes.
The Entertainer will be the main online partner, with an affiliate link from the Good Toy Guide to its retail site.
