VITAL STATISTICS: The Dominican Republic is the second largest country in the Caribbean and is twice the size of Wales. It has a population of over nine million people – said to be among the happiest in the world. The capital city is Santo Domingo which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
GETTING THERE: British Airways operates two fl ights a week from London Gatwick to Punta Cana (with a brief stop in Antigua). Flights depart Thursdays and Sundays and can be booked to enable a two-centre break with Antigua. The Flying time to Punta Cana is 10 hours 30 minutes.
