Did You Know To be a Broadway show
the theatre has to seat more than 500 people and be in the district between 41st and 54th street, and between 6th Avenue and just west of 8th. One exception is the Vivian Beaumont theatre at Lincoln Center. ‘Off
Broadway’ refers to smaller theatres, rather than location.
DISNEY TO THE RESCUE BY SALLY PARKER
"It’s easy to see why the New Amsterdam Theatre is nicknamed ‘the house beautiful’, with its pale pink and green colour scheme which includes carved birds, flowers, plants and animals. However, when Disney took over the theatre in the 90s, its occupants included rats, a tree growing out of the orchestra pit, mushrooms on the walls and frozen waterfalls. In the heart of Broadway on 42nd Street, it was the home of the Ziegfeld Follies in its heyday, as well as the much raunchier Midnight Frolics show in the Roof Garden theatre (for invited guests only). The theatre closed during the Great Depression and
reopened as a movie theatre when the murals were painted over with chocolate brown paint. When Disney restored it to its previous glory it also revitalised the fortunes of 42nd street which had
become a red light district. It’s a beautiful theatre, built in art nouveau style with 1825 seats, all with unobstructed views and perfect acoustics."
