HOW TO SELL TOKYO
The Tokyo Station Hotel will reopen
this autumn after a six-year renovation project of the historic brick building with 150 guest rooms, a spa and French, Japanese and Chinese restaurants. The most obvious opening on the city skyline, however, is the Tokyo skytree. At 634 metres high it claims the title of the world’s tallest free-standing tower and, of course, there’s a public observation deck and restaurant (tickets must be booked in advance). Also new is the impressive Hikarie commercial complex, close to Shibuya’s scramble crossing. It houses numerous shopping and dining outlets and a range of entertainment venues. Tokyo’s shangri-la Hotel was named number one Luxury Hotel in the World in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice 2012 Awards, becoming the first Japanese hotel to win one of the accolades. The 200-room hotel opened in March 2009 and occupies the top 11 floors of a 37-storey building next to Tokyo Station.

What’s New Hotel openings in Tokyo this summer include the highly anticipated Tokyo station Hotel and the Palace Hotel. The latter is located by the Imperial Palace and opened in May after a £750 million rebuild on the site of its predecessor. It has 290 guest rooms, Japan’s first Evian spa, and 10 bars and restaurants.
Windows to Japan “Tokyo and Japan in general is an attractive
destination for everyone, but since it’s more expensive than other Asian destinations it suits older couples and families who can afford to spend more on their trip. That said, the usual comment we hear from guests is that Japan is cheaper than they expected."
CLIVE BUCKINGHAM JTB UK “Don’t miss a visit to Golden Gai. There’s more
than 200 bars and eateries crammed into this small area of Shinjuku. It’s rather scruffy but very atmospheric and evocative of the way Tokyo used to be before the high-rise office blocks and hotels sprang up. Many of the bars have a particular musical theme and their ramshackle walls are often plastered with concert and movie posters.”
JAMES MUNDY Inside Japan
“Tokyo is a combination of the ultra-
modern and the traditional living side-by-side and is more than ‘just another city’. The
'classic' itinerary for first-timers to Japan would be the 'Golden Route' taking in Tokyo, Hakone National Park in the foothills of Mt. Fuji and culture in the city of Kyoto.”
