ParkWord June 2012

The world’s longest water coaster, Europe’s tallest and fastest rollercoaster, Canada’s tallest and fastest coaster; take your pick, they’re all here in this issue. Together, Mammoth at Holiday World (Indiana), Shambhala at PortAventura (Spain) and Leviathan at Canada’s Wonderland (Toronto) represent new investments worth around $60 million/€54 million and are among the largest ever investments at their respective parks.

That’s proof surely of confidence in the future. At Holiday World, the new addition forms part of the Splashin’ Safari waterpark and comes as this family-operated facility goes from strength to strength with over 1.4 million annual guests. At PortAventura, Shambhala is part of a new area of the park, and surrounded by some wonderfully aged Himalayan theming. In spite of Spain’s current financial woes, the park’s director of development Luis Valencia is confident this new B&M coaster can help the venue continue its upward trajectory. Certainly it has performed much stronger than some other large Spanish parks over the years, and now receives significant attendance not just from traditional foreign markets like France and the UK, but now an increasing number of guests from places like Russia.

And at Canada’s Wonderland, the park continues to benefit from

Toronto’s status as one of the country’s fastest growing cities. Just as at PortAventura, the new coaster – also by B&M – provides much needed additional capacity. It’s also a rather awesome ride experience. In fact, if you like B&M coasters – and who doesn’t? – then this is the issue for you as we’ve also got coverage of the Swiss firm’s new Wing Coasters at Six Flags Great Adventure (X Flight) and Dollywood (Wild Eagle).

In North America, it seems, the Rollercoaster Arms Race is not over just yet. Owen Ralph – Editor
