On a random day in mid-March, Twitter was abuzz with all things golf.

iger Woods made international headlines by giving an update on his Achilles injury via his Twitter feed. LPGA stalwart Angela Stanford announced her brand-new eponymous foundation, which provides college scholarships to families affected by cancer. Hank Haney offered free swing tips based on photos and video links provided by his followers. Paul Goydos revealed he was having sur- gery the next day to remove a bone spur from his wrist. Paul Azinger gave away a


signed Ryder Cup fl ag as part of an ongoing pre- Masters trivia contest. Kyle Stanley implored Delta to hurry up and get him home for the fi nale of “The Bach- elor.” And dozens of other players posted observations and opinions from the sub- lime to the ridiculous. Twitter.com, the free


micro-blogging website on which anyone can offer a running diary of their life, 140 characters at a time, turns out to be an electronic community uniquely suited for the golf world, allowing


players, fans and the media to connect with each other in an unprecedented way. It’s an especially helpful tool for a global sport in which the players travel alone without the support or companionship of a team or teammates. “Being a tour- ing pro can be an isolating life and Twitter is a way to feel connected to a larger community of like-minded people,” says the LPGA’s Christina Kim, one of golf ’s most prolifi c tweeters.
