The Olympic Club has hosted four previous U.S. Opens—1955, 1966, 1987 and most recently in 1998.

San Francisco Chronicle golf scribe Ron Kroichick previews the 2012 championship with inside scoop and advice for fans and we take a look back at the ’55 Open in an excerpt from Al Barkow’s soon-to-be-released book, “The Upset,” detailing Jack Fleck’s improbable win over Ben Hogan. Olympic has produced unlikely champions and if history stays true, this year’s Open winner will give us something to tweet about. Twitter has changed the way we communicate and

digest news and as it turns out is perfectly matched for the golf world, bringing the average fan a little closer to those with inside-the-ropes-access. Sports Illustrated’s Alan Shipnuck takes a closer look at the professional golfers who tweet and the impact the microblogging service has on players, fans and the media. Tahoe’s Schaffer’s Mill (below) graces our cover.

Crews are breaking ground on a fi ve-acre campus that will include a clubhouse, multiple restaurants and a

resort-style pool among other amenities. The Johnny Miller and John Harbottle private design (formerly Timilick Tahoe) offers two distinct nines weaving through the pines of Truckee; the inward nine boasts elevation changes and 360° views of the Martis Valley, Lookout Mountain and the Carson Range.
