MAUI WAILEA RESORT O

n the southern part of the “golf” coast of

Maui—the same coast that features the famed Kapalua Resort 30 miles to the north on probably the most popular Hawaiian island—is the luxurious Wailea Resort. The gorgeous property, sprawling across 1,500 acres, includes a bevy of lodging options with six world-class hotels, condominiums, villas and private homes and also plenty of recreational activity with five crescent beaches, a tennis club and shopping. However, the centerpiece of the resort is the trio of 18- hole courses (Blue, Emerald and Gold), which provide ideal golf conditions (sunny

skies with light breezes) and breathtaking ocean views. • The Blue Course or “Old Blue” was what put Wailea on the map. The classic de- sign offers play for all levels as well as views of neigh- boring Kahoolawe Island and Maui’s Mt. Haleakala, a dormant volcano that towers 10,023 feet. • The Emerald Course is known for its benign layout with very few forced carries and friendly fairways; it has been honored several times over as one of the country’s most women-friendly golf clubs by Golf For Women magazine. The course still has the ability to test top golfers as it stretches out to

6,825 yards from the back tees. • The Gold Course pro- vides the best challenge of the three as it plays at 7,078 yards from the tips, yet has four to six tees on every hole for all levels. Relatively new, having opened in 1994, the course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and is

known as a “thinking player’s course” and for its prehistor- ic lava rock walls, immaculate white sand bunkers, coconut trees and, of course, the ocean views. It also hosted the Champions Skins Game, an exhibition of top Champi- ons Tour players, from 2001 to 2007. –Spencer Sorensen
