“Economic success is largely determined by the quality and relevance of the information one possesses.”

Mr Mandla Nkomfe, the Gauteng MEC for Finance

The Vaal University of Technology has established the VUT Southern Gauteng Science Park which, amongst others, does the following:

• Facilitates job creation through the incubation and commercialisation of knowledge-driven business opportunities underpinned by research products, spin-off opportunities and related skills and expertise. • Uses its skills in Advanced Manufacturing,

Alternative and Renewable Energy, Biotechnology (including Indigenous Knowledge Systems) and Chemical Technology as bases for community and industry support.

The University supports SMMEs through the following initiatives:

1. The Technology Station which has an excellent record in providing co-operatives and budding entrepreneurs with tangible products born from ideas such as the Soya Milk Mechanical Machine, the Able and Disabled Bodied Exercise Machine, the Taxi Hand Signal Device, the Tugo Building Blocks, etc. 2. The Tshepiso Programme, initiated by the university’s Department of Fashion, which teaches members of the community needlework and dress-making skills to enable them to start their own small businesses.
