ne week after his Budget Speech, the Gauteng MEC for Finance, Mr Mandla Nkomfe hosted a business forum at
the Vaal University of Technology (VUT). The forum was attended by entrepreneurs from both large and small businesses. The Vice- Chancellor and Principal of VUT, Prof Irene Moutlana explained the university’s model of collaboration with government, community and business as what has become known as the “triple helix model”. She said the model encapsulates a dynamic and interactive relationship between the university, industry and government in the creation, dissemination and sharing of knowledge for enterprise development and economic growth.
Prof Moutlana said “It is usually argued that economic development based only on the development and growth of large industries will not help to solve the increasing and social economic challenges of the country, such as rural-urban imbalances, massive unemployment and poverty.” She said by facilitating the business forum, the Honourable Gauteng MEC, Mr Nkomfe has emphatically created strategic service

partnerships and alliances between the Sedibeng District Municipality, Small, Micro and Medium Enterprises and the Vaal University of Technology.
The VUT Vice-Chancellor informed the forum that during the university’s “visioning” exercise, it learnt that there were new high- tech skills needed by industry, in order to replace the medium-tech skills programmes of the past. The new competency or strategic skills directions include Metallurgical, Environmental, Foundry, Petrochemical, Heavy Current, Industrial and Alternative Energy Engineering which are closely aligned to the country’s economic transformation and national agenda.
In light of the above, VUT adopted a new vision and mission which reads as follows:
Vision: “We are a University that leads in Innovative Knowledge and Quality Technology Education.” Mission: “Our mission is to produce top quality employable and entrepreneurial graduates who can make a positive impact in society.”
