RCV SPOTLIGHT

Fleet-wise Grundon

Grundon, the UK’s largest family-

owned waste company, has invested over £1.5M in introducing 16 new vehicles to its fleet. The acquisitions comprise two front-end loaders (FELs) on Volvo chassis, 11 RCVs and three hook loaders.

“We continually strive to improve efficiencies and reduce the environ- mental impact of our large commercial vehicle fleet,” says Grundon’s group fleet engineer Stephen Townsend. The Volvo chassis for the Heil FELs are 8x4 32 tonne Euro 5 EEV with i-shift automated manual transmis- sion instead of Grundon’s usual choice of Volvo’s “powertronic” automatic option. “The i-shift was evaluated and proved to be well accepted on drive take up and returned better fuel fig- ures than the powertronic,” explains Townsend.

The 11 RCV trade waste vehicles include three DAF FAT 6x4 26 ton-

ners, which provides greater flexibility in light of the reduced need for disposal to landfill sites, and eight DAF FAG 6x2 chassis for better manoeuvrability and improved tyre wear with reduced fuel burn. The cabs are low-entry crew and the bodies a mix between Heil Europe and Geesinknorba, all fitted with a standard comb lift and with bin weighing system. All the new vehicles are fitted with Euro 5 EEV engines to the latest emis- sion control standards in advance of that required by current legislation. Additionally, the vehicles boast fea- tures designed to improve mechani- cal efficiency and reduce cost. These include a timed engine idle cut-off as

a standard, which automatically shuts off the engine if it’s not used for five minutes. The vehicles come with one driving and two steering axles. This means fewer tyres are in contact with the road, resulting in less tyre wear. The speed limiters are set to 52mph to save fuel.

Two of the vehicles will trial a new “Intelligent Power Take-Off” system, which aims to reduce power consump- tion and improve fuel efficiency. “This substantial investment will

ensure that we remain at the forefront of vehicle technology within the waste management sector,” says Townsend.

Cory Environmental has chosen Specialist Fleet Services (SFS) as part- ner in the waste management com- pany’s new contract with Cornwall Council. The Cory contact with Cornwall covers waste and recycling collections, beach and street cleaning services.

Previously eight different opera- tors were responsible for providing these services under the six former district councils. With the majority of contracts due to finish at the end of March, Cornwall Council decided to move to a unified and integrated contract, covering the next eight years. “This contract will enable us to safeguard weekly black bag collec- tions for residents in Cornwall,” says Julian German, Cornwall Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for waste and recycling.

“By providing a single contract 50 Local Authority Waste & Recycling March 2012

we can harmonise the service stand- ards to provide the same level of ser- vice to everyone across Cornwall at the same time as reducing costs for council taxpayers”.

In turn, Cory has awarded a £14M contract to SFS to back up these servic- es with a fleet comprising 200 vehicles for refuse collection, street cleansing and grounds maintenance, including 47 RCVs, sweepers, skip loaders, tip- pers, graffiti removal and street cleans- ing units, plus a number of specialist build vehicles for recycling.

The contract includes 47 RCVs

“Cory has been operating in Cornwall, near Truro, since 1990 and we are delighted to have been selected by Cornwall Council for this signifi- cant contract,” says Nigel Carr, Cory environmental municipal services gen- eral manager. “We have found SFS to be a very professional organisation that shares the same ethos.”

SFS is hailing its part in the arrange- ment as potentially the UK’s largest- ever municipal vehicle hire contract. “This is a very prestigious contract and we are honoured to have been selected as Cory’s preferred provider,” says SFS managing director Bob Sweetland.

“We are committed to helping Cory deliver a top class service to the residents of Cornwall.”
