SMART DESIGNS, SMART RECYCLING Magpie’s successful trial landing
The way local authorities and busi- nesses approach waste and recycling is now recognised as integral to their sustainability policies, improved envi- ronmental performance and carbon reduction targets.
The biggest influencing factor is landfill tax – currently £56 per tonne and set to rise at £8 per year for the next three years. This has produced a tipping point with more innovative waste treatment technologies becom- ing viable while landfill
is increas-
ingly economically unattractive. To help local authorities and businesses recycle more and improve their carbon performance, Veolia is currently trial- ling new technological innovations. Veolia Environmental Services
is
introducing a new approach to the sort- ing of mixed plastics with the potential
Cutting edge technology
to increase recycling rates across the country. The new Magpie technology has been pioneered in the UK at a new integrated waste management facility at Padworth, Berkshire, in partnership with West Berkshire Council. The Magpie increases sorting quality and volume, claims Veolia. Instead of simply separating plastic bottles from cans, the bottles themselves can be transported into different types and then sent straight to end processors. Designed around the same principle
as a luggage carousel at an airport, the Magpie combines the capabilities of a scanner and an optical separator. The waste passes at high speed under the infra-red scanner, which fires a beam at the item. The beam bounces back and tells the Magpie what type of plastic it is by the wavelength and it is then deposited into the appropriate bin by an air nozzle. The scanner counts each piece of material to identify the most common types of waste on the belt. The Magpie can sort up to five tonnes per hour of different types of plastic without the need for manual sorting, says Veolia. If material recov- ery facilities recycled 1% more plas- tics, this would cut carbon emissions by 300,000 tonnes, adds the company.
