SMART DESIGNS, SMART RECYCLING Technology drives the ultimate goal

The recyclate market, as that of any other commodities, is continu- ally changing and with it reprocessors’ acceptance criteria.

To succeed in such demanding con- ditions it is essential that any MRF is kept up to date with the latest technol- ogy and strict quality control of inputs, processing and outputs.

When most people outside the industry think about separa- tion of materials at a recy- cling facility, they imagine a large number of workers picking through the lines with minimum usage of technology.

But modern MRFs are fully

engineered facilities that employ sophisticated mechanical and optical equipment to effectively target the dif-

ferent material streams. This reduces the need for human sorting but does not remove the need for thor- ough quality controls.

The trommel at Crayford

At Viridor’s MRF in Crayford, north Kent, the combined use of experienced person- nel and state-of-the-art technology and software has kept the plant at the

forefront of the industry. year,

Viridor introduced an automated sampling and reporting sys-

tem – the first of its type in the UK – which allows the company to produce accurate and timely data for its cus- tomers. Samples are taken from inputs and outputs by dedicated staff, who then categorise and weigh each mate- rial stream utilising the online report- ing equipment and software. This data can then inform both Viridor and its customers of quality levels and imme- diately flag up issues, ensuring that the strict specification of reprocessors are met and enabling clients to target any problem areas.

It was this same quality control sys- tem that showed large amounts of hard plastics being delivered as part of the co-mingled mix and prompted Viridor to install a new hard plastics shredder on site, which has helped to increase resource efficiency.
