SMART DESIGNS, SMART RECYCLING MRF step towards zero waste

Avondale Environmental, a waste management and renewable energy generation company, has launched the first phase in its development of a £20M state-of-the-art advanced waste treatment centre in Scotland by open- ing a MRF on the site in Polmont. In a step towards meeting Scotland’s renewable energy and zero waste ambi- tions, the MRF is capable of processing 200,000 tonnes of waste every year – the equivalent of all of Glasgow’s black bag waste. Around 60% of the waste will be diverted from landfill through recycling and developing fuels, from the waste, for energy production. The MRF will serve a wide range of existing clients, including industrial, municipal and private sector custom- ers. Scotland’s waste industry is facing increasing pressure to change, from a

mixture of fiscal penalties such as the landfill tax escalator, policy drivers to encourage new uses for waste and good practice initiatives to increase recycling rates. “It’s

a major

Avondale and signals our commitment to Scotland’s renewable energy gen- eration ambitions and supports the Scottish

Government’s zero waste

plans,” says Colin Cooper, Avondale Environmental’s managing director at the launch in February.

“By providing an accessible facility in the heart of Scotland, we can offer a responsible alternative to landfill. It is also good news for the local com- munity as our workforce is set to grow over the coming months as we increase towards full production.”

By 2015 further development phases The MRF at Polmont in Scotland

of the advanced waste treatment cen- tre will include the introduction of a thermal drying facility to produce high quality fuel for resale to other facili- ties such as kiln operators or advanced energy from waste plants.
