IT & SOFTWARE EcoPark scoops top IT award
One of London’s leading waste man- agement sites has won a prestigious IT award by adopting a system that greatly speeds up vehicle throughput. The Gatehouse integrated automated number plate recognition (ANPR) and weighbridge system at LondonWaste EcoPark, recipient of the 2011 BCS & Computing UK IT Industry award, was developed by Isys Interactive. The Edmonton, north London site handles increasing volumes of materi- als at its recycling, composting and energy generation centres, and the Gatehouse system automates much of the weighing and security issues involved as heavily-laden trucks enter and leave. The Isys Gatehouse
system is
designed to maintain and increase the levels of reporting of vehicles without the need for additional personnel.
It allows a vehicle pre-registered with the system to use the automatic weighbridges, with ANPR reading the vehicle’s number plate, checking if it is registered or not, and, if valid, rais- ing the barrier to allow admission to the weighbridge platform. There are further ANPR checks as the vehicle moves to the correct disposal facility. On exit, the system again checks the vehicle and raises the barrier, allowing it to leave the site.
Drivers can choose whether or not to use the automatic weighbridges, and some vehicles, for example where a purchase order or docket must be col- lected, are not allowed on them. Every time a vehicle is weighed, a

ies if a transaction is disputed. The sys- tem has to be robust – reading a wide variety of number plates accurately – and fast, as waste drivers are always keen to get back on the road. “These are the top national awards for the whole of the IT industry, not just waste,” says Richard Bowers, Isys Interactive’s MD on getting the award.
